I am searching for the names of my grandfather's three sisters. The family is from Arendal, Norway. The parents were Ole Emil Berntsen (b. 1855) and Johanna Olsen Berntsen (b. 1858). They had six children. The parents and their three boys, Aksel (1878), Bernt (1889) and Christian (1895), all emigrated to N.J., USA. I am trying to learn about their three sisters (one of whom may be Fredericka) who stayed behind in Norway. Any suggestions how to go about searching are much appreciated. |

No birth records found in Arendal, however Ole Emil Berntsen was born in Holt Nov 10 1855, see #3, his parents were 1st mate Bernt Tjøstelsen and Henrikke S. Henriksdatter.
Johanne Olsdatter was born in Froland Jan 6 1858, see #10, her parents were Ole Ellevsen and Øli (Elen) Johannesdatter, Knapen under Dyngedal.

Yes, you found my family and amazingly fast!! Many thanks to both eibache and Oyvlars, for uncovering so much. While I have had great success in researching what happened in USA, I didn't know how to begin in Norway.
Oyvlars, I can't help but be wondering now, what happened to baby Kathinka Maria Magdalena Berntsen (17-05-1882, dead 03-06-1883.) Do her records indicate any cause?
And what is "Barbu"? Is it a particular area of Arendal?
Thank you both again.

A little bit of info on Barbu. Also, you may be interested to see some records for the family. Ole Emil and Johannes marriage, see #19. The baptism of Axel Conrad, see #96. The baptism of Henrikke Susanne, see #19. The baptism of Kathinka Maria Magdalena, see #47. the cause of death was scarlet fever. The baptism of Karen Magdalena, see #114.
The family was still living at Barbugården when Henrikke Susanne was confirmated in 1895, see #20.
Baptismal records for Berent (born June 19 1889) and Kresten (born July 30 1894) not found in Barbu.

You have been so helpful, the paternal branch of my family tree is filling in quickly! I can now put names to mysterious old family photos - just amazing.
Oyvlars - So the daughter of Henrikka and Peder that you mentioned, is she still alive today? A distant cousin I'd not heard of!
And might I ask you to search yet again, this time for my paternal grandmother's family?
She was Hanne Hansen (b. Oct. 3, 1881) in/around Arendal. She married Aksel Conrad Berntsen (b. Oct. 21, 1878), in/around Arendal, in approximately 1904. I know that Hanne had at least three siblings, sisters Clara, Agathe, and Inga, and that all four of them came to the United States, about 1912. I think Hanne's mother's name was Kristine Elemina Hansen. I do not know her father's name, perhaps Lars or Hans.
And do you see a birth record for my father, Leif Berntsen, born Arendal, June 26, 1909, the son of Hanne Hansen Berntsen and Aksel Conrad Berntsen?
Thank you for searching, I am grateful for your expertise. |

Aksel Konrad Berntsen emigrated 1904, see #40562, he was married living in Tvedestrand.
Hanne was confirmated in Arendal April 12 1896, see #27. She was born out of wedlock and her parents were umbrella maker Hans Hansen and Elemine Christine Thormundsdatter. She was baptized at home, this was confirmed in church Sept 6 1885, see #73. In 1900 Hanne was a servant at Lars Larsens home.
Hannes parents were married Jan 11 1885, see #4.
Hans Hansen was confirmated in Molde Oct 12 1856, see #15, he was born Dec 22 1841 at Hjelset in Bremsnes. His parents were Tailor Hans Hansen and Aagot (last name difficult to read).
Ellamine Christine Tormundsdatter was born Sept 11 1860, see #53, her parents were Tormund Karlsen, Try and Karen Eliasdatter.

The baptismal record for Leif is #41. Interesting to note that the father Aksel Konrad was "stuert" - same profession as the emigrant 1904. I believe it is the same person, but he may have returned to become the father of Leif. |

Another amazing job, hats off to Oyvlars and eibache! I look forward to digesting this afternoon all the names and dates you have provided about my grandmother's entire family, of which I had know very, very little!
Your dates for Aksel would make sense, I know that he and his wife Hanne's first child was Elna, born in the USA in 1907. Apparently they returned to Norway because their second child, Leif, (my father) was born in Arendal in 1909. About 1912 Hanne and her two children returned to the USA permanently, rejoing Aksel. Their third child was born in the USA in 1913. I have heard that Aksel was a seaman, like his father Ole, perhaps that explains multiple ocean crossings?
Thank you both for your time searching the records!! |

I find it so interesting that you noted my Great Grandfather, Hans Hansen as an "umbrella maker". Any idea if that occupation refers to ordinary rain umbrellas, or perhaps related to something on a ship |

Your grandfather Aksel was a steward. The profession as umbrellamaker is most likely repair of ordinary rain umbrellas, by the way his father was a tailor.
