I'm new to the search for Norge ancestors and could use some advice.

My mother says she found an ancestor's immigration record when she visited Menominee, WI but she didn't take good notes and I am trying to find his record.

In the US he went by Even Brewster, but used a different name (possibly Brustar) on his immigration record. A middle name may have been Engabreken (sp?). She did note that he came from Ringsaker, Hedmark, Norway and immigrated to the US via Detroit, MI in April 1863. She said the record listed him as 30 years old, but she also has a birth year of 1845 from an unknown source.

I've used the searches here and the Digitalarkivet (fumbling at best) for Even Br... without luck. Can anyone suggest a more fruitful search strategy?

Thank your for this helpful forum and good luck to all!

Incomplete notes and a lack of sources can be a BIG problem. You have a trail that needs retracing.

Is it your Even living in Dunn Co. Wisconsin in the 1880 US census? A wife named Gurine? and two small daughters named Enga and Sina??
If yes, then that census lists him as 35 years old which would put his birth approximately 1845.

Where should he be found in other US censuses?

I believe Even Larsen, born March 12 1836 could be the one you are looking for. His parents were Lars Engebretsen and Mona Olsdatter.
Even may have been on the farm Brustuen before he left Ringsaker. Have not seen any evidence for his emigration, but 1859-1862 are more likely years since many others left from Ringsaker in those years.

If Even was born approx 1845 there are several with a father xx Engebretsen.

Dear Eibache,

Thank you!

Do you have any suggestions about how I might go about confirming this? I looked in US records (census) using Even Larsen and Even Brusteun (and phonetic variations) but haven't found anything yet.

This also encouraged me to go back to Digitalarkivet but this is still very unfamiliar, as are the naming conventions (I did read the article about it). But let me confirm that the "middle" name was likely to be the father's last name and the last name used in the elusive immigration records are likely to be the farm name?

I have read dozens of your posts and am amazed at your knowledge of this area.

Thanks for helping me,
Zoe

The LDS website shows that Even U. Brewster married Julia (Gurine) Thompson in Dunn Co. Wisconsin 1876. On that record he listed his father as Hans Brewster and mother as Engrid.
That website also includes birth, death and marriage information for several of their children.

http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=home

Wisconsin state censuses and county records for Dunn Co. should also be checked for any possible notation of Even's year of birth.

Dear Lyndal40,

Yes, that is the death record. Thank you!

A strange development I don't understand - in the 1900 census , the widow listed her oldest son and oldest daughter with the surname of Riis, while the rest of her kids were listed with her surname, Brewster.

Any idea about this?

I suspect that there is some misspelling here. Perhaps Sena is actually Lena from the 1880 US Census now married.

Here is the data from Ancestry.com.

Name: Sena Rice
[Sena Reed]
[Sena Brewster]
Home in 1900: Red Cedar, Dunn, Wisconsin
Age: 22
Birth Date: Mar 1877
Birthplace: Wisconsin
Race: White
Gender: Female
Relationship to Head of House: Daughter
Father's Birthplace: Norway
Mother's Name: Julia

Mother: number of living children: 0
Mother: How many children: 0

I forgot to address George. Even tho the transcriber listed him as having the last name Rice, a look at the orginal Census Document shows him as being listed as ---- George not Rice, George. His siblings above are also listed that way. ie ---- Charles E. I think you can assume that his name is actually George Brewster and he is the son of Even and Julia and does not have the last name of Rice (Reeed). He is also listed as being 12 years old.

Name: George Rice
[George Reed]
Home in 1900: Red Cedar, Dunn, Wisconsin
Age: 12
Birth Date: Feb 1888
Birthplace: Wisconsin
Race: White
Gender: Male
Relationship to Head of House: Son
Father's Birthplace: Norway
Mother's Name: Julia
