I am looking for information on Peter Guttormson who settled in Decorah, Iowa. In America he went by Guttormson and his children went by the last name of Ode. He had six sons and three daughters. (Peter was buried under the name Ode, also.) He was born in Norway in 1834 but I don't know where. Does anyone have information on this family's origin? Thanks!

Hi,
Peder was from the Øde farm in Vestre Slidre, Oppland.
This area of Norway is called Valdres, and had a lot of early settlers in Iowa.

#12 Peder Guttormsen
Born 22 Jan 1834, chr 09 Feb 1834
Parents: Gutorm Olsen Øde & Sigri Pedersdatter
Source information: Oppland county, Slidre, Lomen, Røn in Slidre, Parish register (official) nr. 3 (1831-1843), Birth and baptism records 1834, page 24.

A wild guess, but I strongly believe this would be his wife:
#37 Jørond Østensdatter
Born 24 Apr 1840, chr 17 May 1840
Parents: Østen Gulliksen Ridste & Berit Olsdr
Source: Oppland county, Slidre, Lomen, Røn in Slidre, Parish register (official) nr. 3 (1831-1843), Birth and baptism records 1840, page 66.
Why? Age fits, she is from the same area, census-1870 name her Jerund Gutormsen (30) (Julia in 1880), and they have a son named Osten which in case would be named after his maternal grandfather.

Jan Peter

My grandfather (Donald) told me that his father and uncle decided at some point in the earlier 1900's that they should change their name to Johnson to better fit in. My great grandfather's name I believe was Albert Guttormson. He and his brother were from Norway, and moved to Decorah Iowa. These people mush have known each other, having the same last name and living in the same small town at the same time. Any information would be appreciated, as I am very new to the whole family tree search.
sincerely, Erik
