My Great Great Grandfather married Sarah Ann Collard in Maryborough Queensland, Australia 27 July 1874, 4 days after they both arrived in Aust. Believed to be ship's crew (carpenter) on the St James who jumped ship.Parents listed as Niels Swison and Anna Christophersen. Would dearly love to find record of his birth and any other information. |

Hi. The parents don´t correspond. Børre (Børger) Nilsen born Feb. 10. 1847 on Fevang in Sandar, christened in Sandar church in Sandefjord, see #4
Parents: Niels Sørensen and Anne Dorthea Nielsdatter.
Børre (confirmated as Børger Nilsen Fevang 1861) Nilsen I found was a "Snekker" Carpenter in 1865, two brothers and two sisters, see here
It must be your Børger recorded on farm Fevang, Sande 1875, Børger Nilsen, "Rømt Sømand, Matros" Seman jumped ship (abroad), see here
His father was farmer and shoemaker, both of his brothers lived on Fævang, his brother Nils was a cabinetmaker.
Take some time to look into his info. first since the names of the parents don´t correspond, later I can give you the wedding records for Børger´s parents. The mother was from Holtet in Stokke and the father from Fævang in Sandar, they married in Stokke June 10. 1836

Dear Kare If you knew how excited my Mum and I are by this information! It certainly corresponds with most of the limited knowledge we had about Borge Nilsen. His parents were listed on his death certificate by his son and may have been a guess? Borge or Burge as he came to be known was 91 when he died. I'd love to receive any more information that you can find and we will be forever grateful. Mum(83) has spent 20 years trying to find out about her great grandfather and I was worried I may not find anything until after she died. This is one of the most exciting moments in Mum's life and you made it possible. Kind regards Cheryl |

Hi, I am happy for both you and your mother after so many years of investigation. Burge, spelled Børge in Norway, same pronunciation.
Børgers confirmation record from Oct. 6. 1861, #32
Burge´s parents Niels Sørensen age 20 and Anne Dorthea Nilsdatters age 21 wedding record from Stokke parish June 10.1836 , see #19 Fathers; Søren Børgesen Fevang and Nils Helgesen Holte
Niels Sørensen born on Fevang Dec. 12, bap. Dec. 26. 1815 to Søren Borgesen and Berthe Marie Larsdatter, see #5
You dont have the name of the ship he jumped? Probably a ship from the Sandefjord area.
Fevang is an old farm mentioned 1566, the name comes from the plant Fivel/Fevel, "Myrull" Eriophorum, see here
Dif spellings for Fevang, see here
A branch from Burges mother can be followed back to 1723, perhaps further back.
More coming later

Hi Kare - it is a wonder you can't hear the screams of delight coming from South Australia - we have finally found valuable information about our one and only Norwegian connection. Borge's wife,Sarah Anne Collard (born White Notley England) arrived in Maryborough Queensland on the "St James" 23 July 1874 and married Borge on 27th July 1874 so that's what led us to think they may have met on the ship, from England to Australia. Kare, what you have done for us is amazing - we are so happy to have made this connection with you. |

Hi Cheryl.
You are welcome. Australia is opposite part of the globe from Norway, I believe I heard screams of delight from my basement.
Burge´s family in Norway was not poor so he did not leav because of poverty.
He met a girl on board the ship to Australia, fell i love and jumped ship because of her.
Anne Collard must have been very special to Burge since he left everything at home.
A toughing story.

Hi.
Burges grandfather Søren Børgesen married in Sandar July 21. 1811 to Berthe Marie Larsdatter.
Difficult to read because of unclear writing: Left side, left page, 5. wedding from top: Søren Børgesen Fevang and Berthe Marie Larsdatter ibd (ibd.means same farm, Fevang), see here
Berthe Marie was from Fevang Søndre (Southern Fevang), daughter to Lars Larsen and Hellene Marie Hansdatter Fevang, 6 siblings in 1801, see here
The family moved from farm Moe to Fevang between 1783 and -99, Anders age 16 (1801 census for Fevang) born June 20. 1783 on the farm Moe and youngest of the siblings Frederik born on Fevang Jan. 19. 1799.
The scanned parish records are temporary out of work so I will contiue when that is ok.

Thankyou yet again Kare, This is such useful and fascinating information especially your explanation of terminolgy. It is beyond our wildest expectations. The news has now reached my mother's brother and sister in Queensland, where they still live, and they are ecstatic. Mum remembers Borge as she was 9 when he died. In his latter years, with senility, he reverted to speaking only in Norwegian and no-one could understand him. He was a very well-respected man and raised 10 children I will now put Norway on my "must visit" list, when i have the money. It would be very special. Kind regards Cheryl |

Hi, and welcome.
Interesting to hear about Børge and that he only talked Norwegian as an old sick man.
Until the archive works again I can bring up some info.
Visiting Norway you need to visit 3 municipalities where your ancestors came from, (Sandar) Sandefjord, Stokke and Andebu, all within a distance of less than 30 minutes by car in Vestfold county
Picture of Søndre Fevang, the owner Yrjan Fevang had "open farm" for visitors, picture of Søndre Fevang at the bottom of the page here
More pictures from "open day" on Søndre Fevang

Hello Cheryl and thank you, I feel almost embarrassed by all the praise. We are several volunteers, amateurs, who could have helped you. It´s an interesting hobby helping others to find their Norwegian roots. I am sure the owners of Norway Heritage appreciate your donation.

Anne Isaksdatter born on Fekja 1777, bap. Nov 10, parents; Isak Christophersen 1729-1789 and Margrete Anundsdatter 1737-1787 Fekja (Margrete born on Sjuestok in Stokke), see right page 2. from bottom
Isaks father Christopher Mickelsen born ab. 1667, owned Fekja from 1669 until he died 1729 when his mother and widow Anne Gunnarsdatter takes over, she owned Fekja until 1767 when Isak Christophersen takes over.
Christopher Mickelsen Fekja´s father was Mickel Jensen, his mother´s name is unknown, she was a daughter to Christopher Knudsen Fekja, lived as Christopher Fekja and Thorsdatter (unknown 1. name). Christoher owned half of Fekja from 1640. His seal was C.K. His father was Knud Guttormsen Fekja and Kari (unkown lastname) Kari Fekja is mentioned as a widow .
Knud Guttormens father was Guttorm Fekja mentioned between 1590 and 1604, local judge 1592.
Guttorm Fekja, sheriff Claus Duus and Anders Brandsen repesented Stokke 1591 as delegates to the celebration of the new king,14 year old Christian 4 in Oslo.

Hi, perhaps all these names are confusing, genealogy is like a crossword puzzle, forward, backward and sideways.
I will return to Søren Borgersen Fevang, born on Borge in Stokke 1786, christened Dec. 10, see left page 2. fom bottom here. Parents; Borger Nielsen Vestre (Western) Borge and Sibille Larsdatter born on Søndre (Southern) Fevang. Borger paid 710 Daler for Borge 1785, they married April 7. 1786, see left page 7. line from top, here. Cop: (married) 7 April, engaged 11. Marty (March) Soldat (Soldier) Niels Børge Nielsen og (and) Sybille Larsdatter.
Børge was a soldier in 2. Akerhusiske Infantry Regiment, 2. Nationale batallion, Jarlsbergske company (Army organization 1789). Børge was born on Nordre (Northern) Fevang.

Hi, it seems like the Børge name comes from Nordre (Northern) Fevang, this family goes fare back.
Søren Børgesen b. 1786 died on (Nordre) Fevang June 16, buried June 23. 1856 age 70, see #37
His wife Berthe Marie Larsdatter died on (Norde) Fevang Mai 18 buried Mai 24. 1861, age 72, see #20 In the next column her late husband Søren Børgesen is mentioned.
