Dear forum members,

For my master project in history at the University in Oslo, I am looking for primary sources about Norwegian immigrants to Queensland, particularly in the period between 1870 and 1914.

First and foremost, I am searching for letters from Norwegians who settled in Queensland during this period. My aim is to find out more about the everyday life of the Norwegians "Down Under".

I would also be happy to hear from any one with particular interest or knowledge about this small part of Norwegian migration history.

If you think you can help, please answer this post or email me: sjef_fredrik @ hotmail.com.

Any help or assistance would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Kind Regards/Vennlig hilsen
Fredrik Larsen

Hi,
You might want to check NAHA Online for help. I searched in their search engine, Leif, and found many entries for letters that may have been Norwegian's traveling to Queensland and elsewhere.
I would start here and then ask questions of them, to see where you may be able to find more letters.

You may also want to try the Royal Historical Society of Queensland.

Good luck!

Hi Lislcat,
Thanks for this - I did not realise NAHA would hold manuscripts relating to Australia. This could potentially be a good source for me.

I've already been in touch with the Queensland society, but they don't have much.

Cheers,
Fredrik

For memory there is a Norwegian Society in Queensland and I am more than sure they would be able to help you, particularily being Norwegians. Unfortunately my great grandfather came to New South Wales.

Thanks folks!
I've been in contact with them for a while, but they consist mainly of Norwegians who migrated during the last 50-60 years. However, they will help me in my search for Norwegians from the 19th century :)
Cheers,
Fredrik
