My great grandfather Mons Thomassen Forland left Norway in 1900, leaving behind his parents and 8 siblings. He was the youngest, being born in 1877.

His parents names were Thomas Larsen and Oline Monsdatter. His siblings were:
Agathe = May 6, 1859.
Dorthe = January 6, 1861
Anne Monsine = January 22, 1863
Lars = December 29, 1864
Oline = February 1, 1867
Abraham Olai = April 19, 1869
Peder Andreas = 1871
Gyri Malene = March 6, 1875

I also know that Lars had a child around 1900 in Forland that he named Thomas. I have a christmas card dated 1920 from Thomas and Ella to Uncle Mons. I presume this Thomas is the son of Lars and the nephew of my great grandfather.

Does anyone by any chance have further information on any potential descendants still living in the area or know of any way to get in touch with the people over there in Forland?

Hi, not easy to find living ancestors, now you know in what part of Norway to look.

I assume this is the family you mention on Forland in Sund municipality, Hordaland county in the 1900 census, they also had a daughter Bothilde, the parents Thomas Larsen and Oline Monsdatter still lived, see her

A reltive of you?
You will find Agathe Forland b. 1859 on Forland in his Surname register.

Add. info.
Agathe Thomasdatter Forland married Jan Eliassen Bĝrsnes June 1. 1897.

Perhaps you already know:
Your ggrandfather was back in Norway on visit 1903, unmarried sawmillworker, he was a sitzen of Winona, Minn, see here.
The reason for his visit in 1903 was perhaps that his father had died?
When his mother Oline Monsdatter died Jan. 22. 1912 on Forland she was a widow, see here

Hi Bill,
you can contact the people at "Lmh Bygg" in Forland.
It's a local, family-own construction firm, and the chairman (Lars Birger H.) is married to the g.granddaughter of Lars Thomassen Forland b.1864.
So he would be married to your third cousin. They have 11 children, and two of their sons (Frode and David) are also in the firm, and listed with email-addresses.

I had discovered he returned to Norway in 1903, and the fact he was listed as a sawmill worker revealed what little we knew of the fact he had a wooden leg. I have found nothing on the accident that took his leg however.

I am unsure of the reason for his 1903 visit. I have as of yet been unable to find a certain death date for his father. There was also a rumor that my grandfather had a child out of wedlock in Norway, and left for America shortly thereafter, and wanted to bring the child over, but couldn't.

I really appreciate all the information everyone. This has been extremely helpful.

- assuming you mean ggrandfather, Mons Olaj who left March 6 1900, see 461. No child born out of wedlock with him as the father found in Sund 1899.

Lars Thomasens wife Abelone Jansdatter died June 1 1905, see #9

Oline was baptized Oline Christine February 1, 1867, #12
Dorthe was baptized Dorthe Malene Jan 6 1861, #2
