Can anyone tell me when the name Amund was first used? I am also interested in finding out the origin of the name Arne. Thank you in advance.

From Wikipedia:
Amund is a Norwegian man's name, it is a form for Åmund.
Åmund originates from the two Norse names Ogmundr and Amundi that has been mixed over time. The first part of the name originating from age = "respect", egg = "edge of a sword", or à = "very". The second part of the name originating from mund = "protector".
Other forms and variations of Åmund in addition to Amund are: Ommund, Omund and Aamund, and female names Amund, Ommund and Omund.

The direct form of the Norwegian Ogmundr is Ogmund, with variations Agmund and Ommund.
Amund was a popular name in Norway in the 1300s and in 1600 - and 1700's.

Arne is a shortened form of Old Norse names beginning with Arn = "eagle". Arni and Árni are Norse variations of the name. Arne can also be a short form of Arnold coming from the old German name Arnoald, from the words Arn ("eagle") and vald ("leader").
Arne was the fifth most common male name in Norway in the mid 1300's, and the twelfth most frequently used in the first half of the 1600s

Hi, Arne is Norse for "Ørn" Eagle.

The first Arne I have read about is Arne Arnmodsson 936-1024 married to Tora Torsteinsdatter Galge from Giske from the mighty Arnmødling family, mentioned as Arnunger "Eagle chicks".

According the Saga Arne´s gggrandfather Finnvid (means that was found) was found in a eagle nest.

Arne Armodsson Giske was Lenderman 1016 under king Olav Haraldsson "St Olav" and father to Finn Arnesson, king Olav Haraldsson´s lenderman Thorberg Arnesson Giske, Arinbjørn (Arne) Arnesson and army chief of King Olav Haraldsson´s opponents, Kalf Arnesson Egge, at Stiklestad

My family name is Amundsen. I have traced my father's family back to Arne Gundersen and Marit Amundsdatter married July 11, 1692. Is there any way to tell what the original family name would have been (example: Amund or Gunder)? Or do I have to try and trace each family member seperately (example: Arne Gunersen son of Gunder son of ???)?

The original family name for whom?
Have you traced your own family back to 1692 yourself, or did you copy someones familytree...?

Not that it's anything wrong with copying, but if you have done the research yourself, I would expect you to already know the answer to this question...

With the help of a few persons on this board I have pieced together my family tree (on my fathers side) to Arne Gundersen (married 1692). I would very much like to go further back. With the naming convention in use I would assume that Arne's father was Gunder. How do I find records on him or his lineage? I have no way of doing this on my own and am asking for help.

Einar did give you a great deal of information in another thread on this forum. He also informed you that the parish records for your area of interest do not go earlier.
http://www.norwayheritage.com/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4754&whichpage=1

I advised you then to check the LDS Family History Library online catalog for any other surviving records of that area, such a probate records and/or a bygdebok -- what did you learn when you checked?
