I am working with a hand written Stamtavle. I am trying to get all the names and information on it into my computer ancestral file. I've been doing great up until I came across the following names:

Jens Olsen Uttisrud-Sørby

and

Sidsel Aslaksdatter Herrød in Aremark

I'm not sure how to put these names in. Was Sidsel's Surname Herrød or Aremark?

Does anyone have any ideas?

Utisrud and Sørby are both farmnames in Rakkestad. Maybe he lived on both places?

Firstname: Sidsel
Lastname: Aslaksdatter
Farm: Herrød
Parish: Aremark
County: Østfold

Jan Peter

I agree with Jan Peter, the patronymic name is the last name -- the farm name is the address often used as an additional identifier. In the computer you might consider putting the farm name identifier in the name SUFFIX position.

Of course, you can put the names anyway you prefer and sometimes the time period for your ancestors will help make the answer more definitive.

Online study material to learn about Norwegian naming practices and patterns.
