Hi
I am looking for information regarding Jonetta Jørgensdatter, born on August 2, 1833 in Troms (Sortevik in Dyrøy), Norway. She emigrated with the ship Tønsberg from Trondheim to Quebec in 1867 and here all traces of her disappear. Family rumors says it that she was going to her sister Ane Margrethe in the US, but I am not sure about that. Any help would be very appreciated.

Regards Bjørn Arntzen

Do you happen to know where Ane Margrethe lived around the time that Jonetta would have immigrated.

Jonetta had an older sister, Ane or Anna Margrethe Jørgensdatter born june 16, 1825, Troms, Norway. Unknown when she emigrated to the US.

Do you have a reference to the above information where we might be able to find the names of other passengers that left about the same time as Jonetta.

TONSBURG
Departure Trondhjem, Norway - 1867-05-25. See "Emigranter fra Trondheim"
Arrival: Quebec, Que. - 1867-07-06

Jonetta Jörgensdatter (30), destination Quebec is the only info on the manifest.
Anders Christensen (30) and wife Randi Sevaldsdatter (31) are listed just above her. They can be found in Tumuli, Ottertail, Minnesota in 1880.

The most likely destination for her emigration would be Minnesota, with Wisconsin as a second guess.

Just below Anders and Randi in the ships manifest is this lady. I think we can assume that with allowances for spelling issues this is Jonetta Jørgensdatter. No other useful information is given in the original manifest.. From Ancestry.com

Name: Joneth Forgensdatter
Gender: Female
Age: 30
Estimated birth year: abt 1837
Date of Arrival: 1867
Vessel: Protector
Search Ship Database: View the 'Protector' in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database
Port of Arrival: Quebec
Roll: C-4522

Same caveat as above. Sorry Jan Peter, I may have to read your posts a little more carefully.

A canidate from Otter Tail County from the 1875 Minnesota State and Territorial Census is this person. The birth year is not 1833 but I noticed that the birth year from the ships manifest posted earlier would actually calculate to abt 1837.

Name: Jonata Johnson
Census Date: 1 May 1875
County: Otter Tail
Locality: Rush Lake
Birth Location: Norway
Gender: Female
Estimated birth year: abt 1838
Race: White
Father's Birth Location: Norway
Mother's Birth Location: Norway

This is likely the Jonetta mentioned above in the two Minnesota State and Territorial Census, now found in the 1900 US Census from Ancestry.com. Note that the birth date and year on not very close. The immigration year is off by one and it shows that she was married in 1862 which would indicate that this Jonetta was married before she immigrated. May not be a good fit afterall. However the name Jonetta is not very common.

Yes, it seems that this Jonetta must be wrong since she already was married in 1862 and also had two children before Jonetta Jørgensdatter left Norway. In the 1865 Census for Norway, Jonetta J. was at the age of 30, so she was born in 1833 or 1835. But thanks a lot for all your effort.
