In searching in vain for emigration record of Theodore Oltesvig, in the US Census 1910 and 1920 in Montana listed as having emigrated from Norway in 1886, purportedly from Stavanger.
Tobias Oltesvig's purported emigration in 1880. I believed him to be older brother to Theodore, but possibility that Tobias/Thomas may be same person and be father to Theodore...
Iowa State Census 1895 lists Thomas Oltisvig, 40, Mary Oltisvig 36, Theodore 16, John 13, and Gerty 11 in the town of Webster.
Iowa State Census 1905 lists Tobias, Mary, Theodore, John, Gertie, Bertha, Petra, Tom, Rachell, all Oltesvig, all in same household.
I discovered now that there is a town of "Oltesvig" in Rogaland. Perhaps they may have taken the name of the location when they emigrated?
I find a person named "Oltesvig" living on farm Nærbø in 1900 Norway Census, but doesn't seem to be any other family members.
Am hitting dead-end on emigration records ... would appreciate any pointers or suggestions?
Thanks very much, Carra Johnson Callies |

Oltesvig is a farm name, there were three farms in Høle, Høgsfjord, Rogaland in the 1865 census. No Thomas or Tobias was at those farms in 1865. Theodor was born Nov 16 1877, see #38. His parents were trader Tobias Tollefsen and Rakel Maria Jensdatter, Oltesvig.
The parents were married Nov 14 1876, see #7. Tobias was born Jan 4 1849 and his father was Tollef Gundersen, Helmikstøl. Rakel Maria was born March 5 1857 and her father was Jens Olsen, Lauvig.
Rachel Maria was born March 5 1857, see #6. Her parents were Jens Olsen, Selvig and Berte Jonasdatter. Rakkel, her parents and siblings in 1865
Tobias Tollevsen was born Jan 4 1849, see #6. His parents were Tollev Gundersen, Helmikstøl and Gunvor Jacobsdatter. Tobias parents and siblings in 1865.

The older emigration records of the city/port of Stavanger burned. If you've already searched the records that are an attempt to 'rebuild' records for that area and time period -- then perhaps you would make better use of your time to search the most likely North American ports for IMMIGRATION records -- passenger lists of arrival - etc. |

1900 US census finds Tobias and family in Hamilton County, Iowa -- in the little town of Jewell -- surname mispelled to start more like "Altse...". Birthplaces of children still in the household show that the family had also earlier lived in Illinois.
There are two towns in Iowa called 'Webster', one each in Keokuk and Madison counties. Perhaps Tobias and family were actually in Webster City area of Hamilton County.
By 1910 Tobias and family have moved further west to Palo Alto County Iowa.

WOW - as always you are amazing and generous ... this information is just the push I needed and I appreciate it very much! Theodore Oltesvig and his wife Rebecca went to Montana to homestead in 1910, was one of the original homesteaders in the little town where I grew up in Kremlin, Montana. He was always known as the "Mayor" of Kremlin, although there was never an official election. Thank you again for your excellent help, Carra Johnson Callies |

I'm searching for more information on Tobias Tollfsen (Helmkstal) Oltesvig. Born in 1848 Oltesvik, Norway, died in 1914 Jewell, Iowa. He married Rachel Marie Lovig, born 1857 Norway, died 1920 Jewell, Iowa and had 7 children: Theodore, Thomas, Marie, John Lovig, Gertrude, Pearl but have nothing on the 7th child. I am from the line of John. If there is any place beside what is out there guide me. |

- also, as you can see from the posting above Tobias Tollfsen = Tobias Tollevsen, Helmikstøl. He was born Jan 4 1849 and baptized March 18, see referenced baptismal record #6. His parents were Tollev Gundersen, Helmikstøl and Gunvor Jacobsdatter.
