Seeking information about Hans Jorgen Hillstad and his wife, whose name is said to be Helene. They had a son named Edward Hillstad, born October 1858 in Norway. Sometime between 1858 and 1867 they emigrated to the United States and settled first in Minnesota, where my ancestor was born, Louise Marie Hillstad. I have very little information about this family and have not had any luck locating them in the 1865 census, so do not know what part of Norway they are from. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Brandon

Hi,
I believe this should be your Edward:

Hans Edvard Hansen
Born 02 Oct 1858, Christening: 01 JAN 1859 Hof, Vestfold, Norway
Parents: Hans Jørgen Nielsen Sundbye & Helene Hansdr
Source: Vestfold county, Hof in Hof, Parish register copy nr. I 2 (1859-1873), Birth and baptism records 1859, page 3-4.

Just across the border to Holmestrand, you have the Hillestad farms.

Two possible brothers:

Niels Gerhard Hansen
Birth: 02 JAN 1861
Christening: 14 APR 1861, Hof, Vestfold, Norway
Parents: Hans Jørgen Nielsen Sundby & Helene Hansdr
Source: Vestfold county, Hof, Parish register (official) nr. 6 (1851-1877), Birth and baptism records 1861, page 125.

Martin Lorens Hansen
Birth: 09 JUL 1865
Christening: 24 SEP 1865, Hof, Vestfold, Norway
Parents: Hans Jørgen Nielsen & Helene Hansdr
Source: Vestfold county, Hof, Parish register (official) nr. 6 (1851-1877), Birth and baptism records 1865, page 159.

Hard to read the farmname where Martin is born. If it's the same family, the should have emigrated in 1865-1866...

Hans Jørgen Nielsen came from Vaale to Hof in 1854 since he had bought a farm. He was a widower and his second wife Helene Hansdatter came along as did also his children from the first marriage, Elen Anette (1843), Johan Christian (1846) and Nils Gustad (1847).
See #2-6.

Hans Jørgen and Helenes first child was Mathilde Olava Bredine, born Aug 21 1856, see #79.
They were married April 14 1855, see #1.
