Hi,
I would like to find out the actual house number and street for some of my ancestors who lived in Stavanger and Bergen. I only have the information given in the Digital Archives. I believe that the numbers can be translated to a street address. Please could anyone tell me the addresses or where I could find them. They are:
Stavanger, 7c Rode, Ole Olsen, 1865 census
Bergen, Sandvigen 2- 38, Jacob Olay Grung, 1801 census
Bergen, Sandvigen 2- 28, Jacob Olay Grung, 1811 Death
Bergen, 24-139, Arent Henrich Grung, 1846 Death
Bergen, Nykirken, 7-25/26, Johan Georg Grung, 1865 census
Thank you,
Karen.

For Bergen, 24-139, Arent Henrich Grung, 1846 Death, SKUTEVIKSTORVET 8.

For Bergen, Sandvigen 2- 28, Jacob Olay Grung, 1811 Death, VINNÆSGAARDEN 2.

For Bergen, Sandvigen 2- 38, Jacob Olay Grung, 1801 census, number 38 gave no hit, Street could be NORDNESGATEN or TOLDBODALMENNINGEN.

For Bergen, Nykirken, 7-25/26, Johan Georg Grung, 1865 census, 25/26 gave no hit, street STRANDGATEN.

In the 1865 census for Stavanger I find 10 Ole Olsen in 7c Rode.
Difficult to find streets, but I assume it is in "Gamle Stavanger", see map http://kart.gulesider.no/m/IceQF
This is Øvre Strandgate.

7c could also have been in this area.

Thank you so much for your help!
I also think that Ole Olsen was living in "Gamle Stavanger". He went to Stavanger about 1860 as a sailor. That is a very nice and clear arial photo of the area, thanks!

I have had fun with that database. I think for the Sandviken addresses it is necessary to put an "s" before the 2. That way it came up with a hit for 2-38 (Sandviksveien 7) as well as 2-28 (Elvegaten 4). I have had a look on google and the houses are quite close together. I also had another address for Bergen 7-31. Using the database it seems it is Cort Piils Smauet 8. That is near an intersection with Strandgaten so the other houses must have been close by?

This brings another question. There seem to be (older?) wooded houses at these addresses. I know that there were many fires in Bergen in the past and many houses were destroyed. Were houses rebuilt similar to what they were before? What is the chance that the present house is like the one my ancestors lived in?
Thank again,
Karen.

The BerGIS projekt may be of interest to you. If the link works, this is info on 7 31.
This is the link to BerGIS (Bergen Geografical Information System), only in Norwegian I am afraid.
Click on Bergen 1686-1906 on the left side.

What a wonderful project! There is so much information and help available if you just know where to look. Thank you so much for showing me this site.

I have been able to confirm and see where my great grandmother, Jussine Magnusdatter, was born, 7-26 = Lille/Store Altonagaard 3. They later lived at 7-31. She lived at 7-25 = Lille Altonagaard 5, after she married Johan Grung. It shows that my grandmother, Jenny Grung, was born there too. When checking against present day maps I can see that 7-25 and neighbouring houses and street have gone. Big developments are in their place - hotels? The house at 7-31 is still there, at least similar size and same place. Similar houses to those of 1855/88 are also still there for 44-139, S2-28 and S2-38. I have found other pieces of interesting information about my ancestors on the site too.

Thank you again for showing me this amazing site,
Karen.

This is a map showing where the different fires were in Bergen.
Clicking on the date for the individual fires will give you more info although it is only available in english.

Skutevikstorget in the middle of the picture.

Cort Piil-Smauet 8.

Elvegaten 4

Sandviksveien 7.

Thank you for another very cleaver map! I can see that families moved because of the fires, especially the Magnussens living in Rode 7 in the 1800s. There seems to be no information on fires in Sandvigen. Is there information somewhere else?

Thank you also for the pictures of the houses. It is so good to be able to see what they look like now. They look like they could be close to what was there in the 1800s. It is fun looking around their neighbourhood too! I have started to use your map generally. It goes more places in Norway and seems clearer. Is Cort Piil-Smauet 8 in an old preserved area of Bergen?

I am still playing with the other maps, looking for the houses of the extended family. It is very rewarding! I tried to find more information on Sandviksveien 7 on the web. Seems that a school was built on this site in 1896/8 (21 classrooms) but then taken down and a community building replaced it in 1986. Not sure if I have confused things in translation. Is this the same house as we have in the maps? Seems too old to have been built in 1986. There seemed to be a bigger school across the road in the older maps but Sandviksveien 7 also seems to be marked as a school. Is it likely that the original house was replaced with a school?

Many thanks!
Karen.
