He married Henrietta Marie Braa (parents immigrated in USA in 1883 from Trondheim) in 1908.He immigrated to Canada with his brothers Gunder and Rudolph in 1913. He listed his residence as Oster Aker on the emigration forms. I believe his father is Helmin Hansen born in Raade. Any help finding his parents, their families and ancestry would be appreciated.

The baptismal record for Hans Helmin is #35. He was born Jan 23 1887 at Aaseneiet in Vestre Aker.

His parents, Helmin Hansen and Maren Sofie Gundersdatter were married in Askim, Østfold April 11 1882, see #5. (When the mother is called Karen Sofie in the 1900 census, this is a misspelling)

The baptismal record for Helmin Hansen is #95, he was born Dec 1 1852 at Krogstad in Raade. His parents were Hans Gundersen and Oline Andersdatter. (Oline was actually baptized Olia)

The marriage record for Hans Gundersen, Mandstad and Olia Andersdatter, Solberg is #12. They were married June 23 1836 in Onsøy.

The baptismal record for Maren Sofie Gundersdatter is #120, she was born July 18 1853 at Skallougs Plads in Eidsberg. Her parents were Gunder Larsen and Christine Simonsdatter.

The 1900 census tells the family lived in "Bryggerhusbygningen" on farm Søndre Østensjø, the southern of two Østensjø farms, split in two farms Nordre and Søndre Østensjø 1656, named after Lake Østensjø.

"Hovedbygningen" Main house is almost hidden between the yellow barn and the yellow "Bryggerhusbygningen" in front, see here

The 2. building on the farm in the 1900 census was "Bryggerhusbygningen" or "Drengestua" where Helmin and his family lived is placed to the right of the barn in the photo, and has been restored
A short description of previous owners, drawings and decriptions of the house, in Norwegian, see here

A translater if you want to read the contents here

- Gunder Larsen son of deceased Lars Nielsen, Lekum (it's a farm, not town) and Christine Simonsdatter daughter of Simon Thorersen, Lislerud (it's a farm, not town).

- in both cases Lekum is Lekum Pl - meaning Lekum Plads (Lekum cotter place) Mari/Kari Thorersdatter/Thorsdatter - confirmation based on bapt record would be the best selection I think.

- 377 Tjeneste karl = male servant, 378 Enke efter første ægteskab = widow after 1st marriage.

quote:

- Simon came from Pythsbraaten - cotters place, not a town.

Maria Gundersdatter 1801 Census. If this is the correct census I think that Gunder Petersen is her father but cannot translate who anyone else is in this census.
- only Marias mother is in this census, she is Aase Baardsdatter, Inderste 34 Ugift Nærer sig ved spinden (renter 34 years unmarried works as a spinner) Maria is Hennes datter - her daughter (born out of wedlock), the bapt. record is next to the last in 2nd column, baptized Nov 26 1797, her mother was at Lindhol Plads and the father was Gunner Jensen, Wette.

quote:
I cannot locate a 1801 census for Simon Thorersen.
- I believe he was not born before the census was taken. Most likely his bapt record is the 3rd in second column, baptized Sept 27 1801. His parents were Thorer Willumsen and Mari Simonsdatter, Pyth.

Hope I got it all!

Drengstua or Bryggerhusbygningen was build ca 1800 on Søndre Østensjø (Southern farm east of the sea/lake) is still standing but in poor condition.
The whole farm is protected

Drengstua means the house where the male servants lived.

Bryggerhusbygningen, origin it was the house beer was brewed, later it became the house where clothes were washed, but this building was rather large and contained at least one apartment.
Most Bryggerhusbygningen contained an a apartment.

Excavations show that people has lived here since the early iron age, ca 500 BC to 500 AC.

Add information for Søndre Østensjø.

The farm was in 1657 owned by king Fredrik III and sold to private owners.
In the 1700s there were several owners of the farm and it was split up in two farms, Nordre (Northern) and Søndre (Southern) Østensjø.
1837 Halvor and Nicoline Holtsmark-Tveter bought Søndre Østensjø, build new houses and expanded the farm and it became one of the largest and best farms in Aker.

Their son Håkon Tveter takes over both Nordre - and Søndre Østensjø and the farm was owned by this family until 1996 and was operated as a modern model farm.
Livestock production was discounted 1963, and run today with grain production.
The Østensjø farms are today the best preserved farms in Oslo and are protected by the law of cultural heritage.

Thank you Kåre for all your help and providing all this information.
I understand this means that as the farms are protected by the law of cultural heritage that I would be able to visit the farms. My sister is traveling with me and my cousin and his wife are also traveling to Norway. We are all very interested and excited to visit Oslo and see the farm where out grandfather was born.
If you have any suggestion of places to visit it would be appreciated. Thank again.
