Is there a record of the death of Othar Hjalmar Bommen (my G/Grandfather) in Norway.
I have a record of him in Wales on the 1911 census but can find no death record in the UK.
He was a Master Mariner, born in Kongsberg, in 1850.
He applied for and was granted British Nationality in 1888.
Thank you
John

I can´t help you with English death records John, sorry, but I have a Bommen story I will share with you.
Still living many Bommen in Kongsberg, many were merchants in the past.

A relative of Othar, Paul Bommen b. 1889 in Kongsberg, hired in the 1930´s a house from my grandparents about 18 Km outside Kongsberg where he ran a small general store.

About 200 yds from the general store he also bought a plot from my grandfather and where he build a house without any help.
Paul Bommen was a well liked and respected man.

But he was a much better merchant than carpenter, most of the walls were leaning and many of the outher boards were bad fixed and not carefully cut, in windy weather the boards slammed my father told me.
Locally the house was called the Magpie nest.

Hi again Kċre.
I remember you were a great help to me some 15months ago.
I have been researching Othar's life here in Britain and his voyages as Master Mariner on SS Sowerby and SS Alverton covering places as far apart as Burma, Savannah (USA) and Teganrog (Russian Black Sea Port)
I do not believe Othar died in England as there is no record of his death here.
It is suggested he returned to Norway some time after 1911 and may have died there.( He was 61 in 1911)
When I have Othar's life complete I shall try to make contact with living descendants of his family.
Thanks again John

Thank you Peder for that link.
No record of Othar there I'm afraid, but an excellent site for further reseach into the family. Thank you again.
Perhaps I'm destined never to find the final fate of my Great Grandfather.
Best Regards
John

Hi Kċre
Oh no!
I have no intention of giving up!
Just giving in to a little frustration
I will keep searching.
I just felt it possible Othar may have returned to Norway for family/personal reasons and then died there.
His daughter Mabel, was married by this time and his wife was in a sanatorium.
He was 61 and stated as unemployed Master Mariner in the 1911 UK census.
Thanks for link to Ancestry, an excellent source.
Searching all Births, Deaths, Marriages in UK from 1850 to 1950, for the name Bommen, found only 3.
Othar - marriage,
Mabel (daughter) - marriage
Edith (Othar's wife) - death.
Regards
John

John.
Can´t find Othar Bommen buried in Norway of a total of 92 Bommen, 25 of them are buried in Kongsberg municipalty.

You can search for Bommen in Norwegian cemeteries, enter choose Cemetery here.

The link is not complete for the intire country yet.
Also photos of the tombstones will be completed within a reasonable time ( Based on volunteers)

Hi again Kċre
Thanks for the link
I've seen the 94 Bommens there and the high number from Kongsberg and Oslo areas.
It is quite possible some are descendant of Othar's siblings (well brothers anyway) .
I will continue to return to this site as it may be updated and I hope to build a descendants tree from Christian and Barbra Bommen.
Best regards
John
