Am attempting to regain contact with SVEAN family in Norway. All contact lost during WW2. There are lots of mentions in websites, but cannot read N. so am somewhat at a loss.

Hi uleta
Your chances of getting any help would increase if you provide more information, like where in Norway they came from, and names.

The Family name is SVEAN; three brothers from(?) emigrated in 1891 to the US. One family remained in N. Dakota, and two moved to Alberta (Canada). All contact was lost during WW2. Looking particularly for OLE SVEAN, his wife LOUISE MARTINE JENSEN (?) who I believe came from Vardo, their daughter MARIE who must have been a very young child at the time. There are lots of Sveans on websites, but they are mostly Norwegian and I am at a definite disadvantage there!

I did some online searching and found some of what seams to be your family:
Ole K. (Karstensen) Svean, age 27 emigrated from Vadsø vie Trondheim. He departed Trondheim on the Wilson Line ship Domino on July 7th 1891. He was traveling with his wife Lovise age. 23 and daughter Marie age 2. They had tickets prepaied in America on the Cunard Line from Liverpool, and I guess they disembarked at Boston, as Boston, Mass, was their final destination.
I then took a look at the Vardø census of 1900, and found only one family bearing the surname Svean: Nils Svean b. 1848 at Ytterøy in N-Trøndelag, wife Ingeborg b. 1855 at Lødingen and children Alfred b. 1886 in Vardø, Ingvald b. 1891 in Vardø and Carlotte b. 1894 in Vardø.
So assuming this was a relative of Ole Svean I went to the 1865 census for Ytterøy to look for any Svean people there. I found a family which looks like a very close match:
At Værran in Ytterøy, North-Trøndelag: Carsten Larsen, Cotter age 59, wife Ingeborg Pedersdatter age 46, son Lorents Carstensen (a sailor) age 25, daughter Ellen age 23, son Peter age 20, son Nils (shoemaker) age 17, son Anthon age. 5 and what could be your Ole; son Ole Jorgenius Carstensen age 2.
Finding living relatives is worse. I checked the online Norwegian telephone directory, and found 78 people registered under the name Svean. Your family could however, have used the name Carstensen or Karstensen (the patronymic). If you do not know the names of any of the people your family were in touch with during WW2, it will be a very hard task finding the right people, that is, if they don't by coincidence read this message

Thank you so much - you have found the info I wanted...Ole was known as Ole Jorgensen Svean in N. America, but I had no idea of the Carstensen or Karstensen connection. Thank you again for your help!
