Niels Ingebrigtsen Sael

If Sael is the farm from which he came, where is that located? Would there be photos of this farm?

Hi Ken,

Sehl is a farm in Aal, Hallingdal. Some parts of the new Aal bygdebok are still available on the web and if you google Aal bygdebok google will find.

If Niels was born approx 1844, he is on the 1865 census, the farm is Sæhl søre.

Sel is high up in the hillside 700 m North of Arnegard in Ål map
Try the zoom, and the Hybrid or Flyfoto option.
Another map. Try Norge i bilder option.

Ål farm history book (bygdebok) is partly online: Ål bygdebok
Søre Sel is farm nr 45, and you find Niels Ingebrigtsen (= Nils Embrikson) in Uppistugo
Names were spelled in many different ways. Embrikson is probably most correct according to local pronunsiation.

It was a large family, Nils had 8 siblings, the father Embrik/Ingebrigt Olsen Sehl died 1859, 3 of Nils siblings emigrated to USA.

Nils married in the US to Anne Marie Mathisen from Oslo, three childten;
- Embrik

Hi,
perhaps you don´t have the letter Å, here is some information about Ål, a small municipality in a valley, Hallingdal

The only left from the old Stavechurch demolished 1880 is the entry portal and a plank with following Runic incriptions;
"Toralf gjorde denne kirken, Geirstein var med og Gunnar , Vidar, Eivind og Eirik. Nå har jeg risted alles (navn)"
En tilleggstekst lyder "Alf var og (med)"

"Toralf build this church, Geirstein too and Gunnar, Vidar, Eivind and Eirik. Now I have written everone´s (name)"
A suplementary text reads; "Alf too"
