I am searching for my Great grandfather's family. His name was Hans Christian Ingval Hansen, b Eiker, Buskerud 4/14/1858. Parents Hans Hansen b abt 1828 and Jorgine Christofersdtr, b Eiker 4/1/1829. Our records show her last name as Holst, although the Norwegian records I have found do not mention Holst. Her brother was Andrew Christofersen Holst b 1841 Eiker. Both Jorgine and Hans Hansen were deceased by 1865, so with Hans Hansen so common, I need help.

The bapt record for Hans Christian Ingvald is #188. The parents were Shoemaker Hans Hansen, Lysagereie and Jørgine Christoffersdatter.
It looks like they were married Febr 27 1854, see #14.
Hans Hansen were from Formoe in Modum, 26 years old and the father was Hans Hansen.
Jørgine was 24 years old, born on Skistad and the father was Christoffer Nilsen.

The bapt record for Jørgine is #52, parents were Christofer Nilsen and Anne Evensdatter, Skistad.
Jørgines brother Anders was born June 28 1841, see #152.

The bapt record for Hans Hansen, Formoe is a challenge.

Jorgine died on 4/22/1862 on the bark Askur just 25 miles from Faerder Lighthouse on her voyage to the US, Captain Dechmann, First Mate Carl John Larsen of Drammen, Norway and owned by the captain's brother, Holm Larsen. The ship returned to ground and Jorgine was buried April 24 near Askerstrand.

It appears Jorgine may have had sisters Kare Maria, Berthe Johanne and possibly two other brothers, Hans Anders and Niel Edvard. It becomes so convoluted because of their use of the name Holst in the United States. We also have records of a John Christoferson Holst and perhaps just a John Holst, and they were related to Jorgine, but we don't know how. John Holst went to the Yukon Gold Rush with Hans C.I. Hansen (Hanson) and Andrew Holst in approx. 1897.

Thank you so much. Why do you think they used the name Holst in the U.S. Would that be a farm name?

Hans Hansen Lysagereie and Jorginne Christofersdatter named their first daughter Hanna Andrea. She was born 11/7/1855 in Buskerud. After reading the Norwegian naming practices, I would wonder if her paternal grandmother was Hanna or if perhaps she had the feminine version of Hans because her grandfather had died. Just grasping for someway to determine which Hans Hansen was his father.

Thank you. I met a man by the last name of Holst a few years ago who was from Montana. He said that originally the Holst name was Swedish and that part of the family migrated to Norway. He was from the Swedish Holst family. Does anyone know a history there?

There were several Holst families in Norway, some of the ancestors came from Germany and Denmark.

The Holst family above was from Eiker, origin unknown, in the nearby municipality Drammen in the old days there were merchants named Holst, the origin was probably/perhaps farm Holstmark in Lier

A Danish Holst family from Copenhagen;
Royal measures of grain Hans Pedersen Holst 1688-1715, his son Lieutenant Colonel Johan Hybner Holst 1702-78 settled in Norway, he was father to General Major Hans Gram Holst 1744-1815, his son Johan Hybner Holst 1774-1835 served in Sweden as Major General from 1810 and was knighted by the king 1817 to Johan Hybner Von Holst.

Some Holst genealogy from Eiker here

Another intriguing fact is that Hans Hansen (Formoe) remarried in Wisconsin to Emily or Emilia Nilson, whose husband Amund Nilson from Norway had just passed away. They were married 2/8/1863 in Spring Brook, Wisconsin. Then Hans died in 1865, but I wonder if Amund could have been related to the Christofersen/Nilsen/Holsts. I haven't been able to find any immigration records because they came through Canada, Quebec, in 1862, and no records were kept then. Although, Hans Hansen enlisted in the Wisconsin Army and died in the Civil War, there seems to be no records of him entering the United States. Andrew Holst came on the same ship with Hans Hansen and his three children, Hanna Andreas, Mathilde, and Hans Christian Ingvald Hansen.

Beware, the link given for bapt of Karen Maria Christoffersdatter by Oddvar Bonden in Rootsweb June 21 2009 is a wrong one.
There were many Karen Maria born in Eiker in 1826, I believe yours is #145, parents being Christofer Nilsen and Anne Evensdatter at Skistad.

I was looking through a portion of the 1865 census and found the surname Eker. Hans Hansen born abt 1828, when he enlisted in the Civil War in Wisconsin signed his name Hans' Hansen Eger. Above that the military listed his name as Hans Hanson Aker of Norway and below as H. H. Eger. It occurred to me that I should ask if this might be of significance. This is the same Hans Hansen Formoe married to Jorgine Christofersdatter.
