Mathias Bergsven (b. Feb. 15, 1833 in Illeulland, Faberg, Norway) left Norway, supposedly April of 1883 with his wife, Mari, dau. Annetta. son Martin and another infant, names Olaf Bergsven. They went thru Liverpool and arrived in Pennsylvania May 10, 1883 and headed to Crookston. My question is the infant Olaf. I have been unable to find any birth record of Olaf Bergven. Mathias and Mari had another son, Ole, who died at the farm of Bergsveen, but this Olaf is a mystery. Any suggestions on how I can discover who he is? (They also had another son, Christ Matteson, who had already come to America and settled). Thank you, Dusty

That would actually be Mathias Christensen of Lilleulland farm in Fåberg. Your information about their year of emigration came from where?

What sources and what years have you checked for the birth of an 'Olaf Bergven'? What year was the child born?

Mathias with wife and early children still lived on a residence still connected to his birth farm for the 1865 Norwegian census -

By 1875 the family was no longer in Fåberg -- so did you check Østre Gausdal records too?

Annette M Bergsveen is listed as moving out in 1883, see #1.
She was born Jan 16 1869, her bapt record is #9.

- he was born Marc 8 1861 and baptized Christian, see #49. He was confirmated in 1876 in Vestre Gausdal.

The brother Ole was born Dec 26 1864, his bapt record is #9.

Martin (son of Matthias) wrote up a short story of his travel to the United States stating when they left their home in Norway, how they went by steamship to Liverpool, England and then sailed on the "British Princess" to Philadelphia, landing May 10, 1883 and then traveled on to Minn. He mentions his sister traveling with and how his older brother was already in the States, but never mentioned Olaf. I found their names on the migration list (website) which Les Hanson provided to me. It shows their date of departure as Apr. 201883 and Olaf's name is listed as Kristen. on this list. However, on the record I have of him coming into New York, it shows it as Bergsven. So, he is a mystery. -Dusty

Thank you for this info. I've been trying to find a copy of their moving out record, but focused more on looking for the father's name - Mathias Bergsven (traveling together was Mathias, Mari, Annette, Martin). It seems rather strange why they would have Annette in this record and not the rest of the family listed? Martin, my grandfather and Annette's brother, said the family left their home April 14, 1883, so this would fit the picture. Thank you for your help! :) -Dusty

Yes, I did check those records and there is no listing of Olaf with the family. Thank you for sending me a link to that record. -Dusty
