Hi, I'm having trouble getting past my great great grandfather, mainly because I can't seem to be able to nail down his exact name. No one in the family still living has it either, so that's no help. I see all these variations in official records (which I have a good number of):
Barduns Anderson (land record for his farm) Badenus (1860 Iowa census) Bardieus (1870 census) Berdinas (1875 Minnesota census) Bartinus (1880 census) Berdinas (1885 Minnesota census) Bardinas (1895 Minnesota census) Bardenes (1900 census) Berdinus (1905 Minnesota census)
So yeah, this doesn't help matters much. Is there a commonly used name that might be similar, or might one of these be correct?
FWIW, the first born daughter's name is different on the four censuses I have, the first one at 1 year old is Betsy, the next is Bardina (11), then Bertina (15), and back to Betsy again (21).
Before anyone ask if I have the right censuses, I can very that it's the same family by the neighbors consistently showing up at each and every census, and the kids might change names (like avove), but the ages and where they were born are consistent. |

Hi, it looks like his name could have been Berdines, if he is born in Norway. In that case, he is most likely from Rogaland county. A possibility: Berdines Andersen Vik born 1832 from Skudenes, Rogaland, left for America in 1858. He is most likely born (Chr?) Feb 1831 in Skudenes, Rogaland, with parents Anders Knudsen & Berte Rasmusdtr. Berdines married Serine Johannesdr two weeks prior to their emigration: Groom's Name: Berdines Andersen Bride's Name: Serine Johannesdr Marriage Date: 23 Apr 1858 Marriage Place: Skudenes,Rogaland,Norway Groom's Father's Name: Anders Knudsen Bride's Father's Name: Johannes Tronsen
He can be found in Sparta Township, Chippewa, Minnesota together with wife Serina in census-1900. Birthdate listed as Oct. 1830.
Emigration record from May 6th, 1858: #19 & #20, right page. Berdines Andersen Vik (26 7/12 y.o.) Serine Johannesdr (36 y.o.) Source: Rogaland county, Skudenes, Parish register (official) nr. A 3.2 (1847-1863), Migration records 1858, page 462.

Absolutely correct Jan Peter.
The bygdebok for Skudenes and the work added by the Slektsforum Karmøy group also indicates that Berdines' parents and all surviving siblings also emigrated to America.

OK, so how were you able to find this needle in what seemed to me a haystack? I'm curious if there is a similar thought process that could be used to determine the other side of the family tree, which i definitely have a bit less information on. |
