I am looking for any help in finding my 2nd great grandfather. All I know is: John Brown born July 1829 Norway moved to San Francisco 1854 naturalized US citizen in 1857. Naturalization records apparently lost in 1906 San Francisco earthquake. He never used an initial in his name. died in Madera County, California 1908. He was a farmer/dairyman and worked in a lumber flume all his life, so does not seem to have a connection with the sea, as I see many Norwegians have. |

In the 1900 census he is registered as divorced. He must be recorded at other censuses where more info may be avalable.

Not many clues to grab there! Have you got any more info?
Norwegian name, county, parish, address, last residence, parents, siblings...? |

Brown was certainly not his name in Norway. Any more clues would help: - names of children? |

Hi,
Prior to 1893 Madera County was part of Fresno County & Mariposa. At www.usgenweb.com there are several interesting databases of information pertaining to Madera county residents-- including lists of voters including physical descriptions. The date given for his naturalization in the 1880 voter list (which is the earliest one in which he appears with an original registration year of 1878) is 28 May 1875 at San Francisco. He doesnot appear in the marriage license index at the site or not at least under the name of John Brown. In the 1880 US Federal census, he is marked as "married" but neither his wife nor children appear to be living with him. In the 1860 census index at Ancestry, there appears to be 5 John Brown born in Norway of varying ages living in California.
Information about children might be useful if, for instance, stories about them tell about their father, or church records mention their father's Norwegian name, occupation or origin.
A mystery man, to be sure.
Hilsen Jackie M.

Hi,
Do you know who the Thomas Brown born Norway naturalized 26 Apr 1866 in Alpine County, California is, who is also a registered voter in Madera County in 1898? Possibly a brother to your guy?
Other Norwegians listed in the register are Andrew T. Frickstad 57, Knut Frickstad 54, Ole Johnson 43, Charles Andrew Leroy 39, Elias Ommundson 32, Ola Osmunson 22, Ole Olsen Satre 49, Charles Thompson 37, Jones Beneson 40. It might be possible that Norwegians from the same place in Norway came to settle in Madera County.
Hilsen, Jackie M. |
