I have an ancestor who came in 1852, at the age of 9, from Heddal to Columbia County Wisconsin along with her parents and almost surely two older siblings. She married John Ambrosen in Wisconsin Jan 1, 1862 and her 1930 obit from a Wilmot, SD newspaper gives her maiden name as Bergit Leiquvam. Her first name varies in census records: Brita, Betsey, Bessie. But her surname remains this very odd spelling. Two brothers born in Wisconsin spelled it Liequam, as did her mother Ingeborg. I am trying without success to trace the parents of Begit back into Heddal records. Any suggestions on how I might spell the family name? All I can tell you about Ingeborg (born about 1820 in Telemark) is she had numerous US children and all have disappeared in US records under other surnames. Any leads will be appreciated.

Leikvam farm in Nes, Sauherad, Telemark.

Where in Columbia, Wis did they stay? Do you have a census-link for Ingeborg?

Bergit (Birgitte), her parents Kittil Olsen and Ingeborg Olsdatter and her brothers Ole and Lars moved out from Nes in Sauherad 1852, see #8 - 12.

Birgittes baptismal record is #100.

Thank you. You both are amazing. If I'd only asked 2 months ago. Thank you. Thank you.
I also benefitted from a site posting about the old Ryen family, and its gift of land for the Heddal church. All those people are showing up in my husband's tree.

Another bow of appreciation, elibache. I could find the church records but not make any sense of them, being unfamiliar with the language and approach to the record keeping.

Are you willing to take on two more Heddal people who have me stymied?
Ragnild Joensdr married Ambros Greggarsen (1765-1807); their son was Jon aka Joen Ambrosen (1794-1854)...I cannot find anything on Ragnild (birth/parents, death);

my other question is about Jon Ambrosen (as above). He married Margith Johnasdr on Jan. 10, 1819. But I know nothing (again, birth, parents, death) of Margith. The marriage was in Heddal.

I understand if I ask too much, and apologize. Pat

The old Ryen family and its gift of land to Heddal stavechurch you mention, Raud Rygi build the church ab. 1230, was Halvor Ryen´s, d. about 1660, ancestors and owners of Ryen 1590, Gunleik and Tormod Ryen, Saamund Meland and Knud Leikvam from the 1590 trial where priest Jens Jacobsen wanted to know what land the Ryen men´s ancestors had given away to the vicarage and where the boundaries should be.

Gregar and Anlaug Ryens son John 1775 (Ambros brother) is my ancestor, they were 11 siblings.

Kare/re Heddal church. Thanks for all the assistance and added info. I wonder if anything is known of Raud Rygi other than he was the builder. It is amazing his identity survives.

elibache/ I appreciate all the help. Thanks. One reply has be wondering: Ambros Gregarsen, Ryen and Ragnild Jonsdatter, Graver were married at home, without earlier engagement, March 19 1793.

I assume this is unusual. What does it suggest?

Thanks from Maine, USA
