Jo, My great grandfather (Robert Crichton), married in 1877 in Glasgow. The certificate shows his occupation as "seaman purser". Usual place of residense shows "on board S.S Indiana". Records show it to be an American line. Do you perhaps know how I may get crew records for that Steamship, of that period?

Hi,
Sorry I don't know of a place to find crew lists per se but according to information on this site the ship was sailed first in 1873 and the last date in the database here is 1897. You could look for shipping dates here. You might also try looking at www.genealogybank.com for S.S. Indiana filter by dates and then look at the "shipping notices" (there were over 3,100 mentions of S.S. Indiana without filering) and see where it was leaving and landing, and then look at the passenger lists because sometimes crew names appear there as well but may or may not be indexed as a passenger.
Good Luck, Jackie M. |

Thanks Jackie,
Have looked at many articles about the ship. Was famous for conveying "Ulysees S Grant" from USA to Liverpool England in 1877. Many good articles about the rough voyage on the return trip. No mention in any articles of crew listings. I will keep looking. Going to try actual owners of the shipping line.
Regards,
