My grandfather's family came to the USA in about 1865 or maybe earlier. The family name is Amble. They are listed in the 1880 census in Faribault County, MN. The father is "John", mother, "Regneld" . There are 7 children 1 girl, Mary; boys, Ole, Edward, Andrew, Christian (my grandfather b. 1868), August, and Martin.
I guess my question is: Is Amble a Norwegian name? I haven't found others. Just starting.( Late, I know, a cruise to Norway next month.) My mother said that they came from a farm near Oslo.

Ragnilds parents? 1865.

I believe Johannes Andersens father in the marriage record is wrong, it should be Anders Johannesen, see confirmation record #4.

John Amble = Johannes Andersen was born out of wedlock July 29 1824, see #66, his mother was Anna Olsdatter, Hove and the father was Anders Johannesen, Ambledalen.
The parents were married Nov 9 1826, see #27.

Anders Johannesen, his parents and siblings in 1801.

Anna Olsdatter, her parents and siblings in 1801.

A summary.
Johannes (John) Andersen Amble married to Ragnild (Regneld) Lassedatter, four children born in Norway
- Marthe Marie/Mary 1856
- Ole 1858
- Andreas/ Andrew 1860
- Edvard/Edward 1862
The family emigrated between spring 1863 and spring 1865.

Not to make any confusion, I aslo think the wedding record can be wrong regarding Johannes father been Anders Christensen, but Johannes had a namesake in Sogndal born ab. 1824, this Johannes Andersen Amble, age 27, married in Faaberg at Lillehammer Sept. 22.1851 to Christine Olsdatter.

Farm Amble

Wow! Thank you so much. Yes my grandfather was born in Minnesota. I believe his brother Andrew was the first born in this country.
My grandfather named my mother Thelma Rognelda which we had thought was for his mother. I see that the spelling is different.
I will go look at my Norway map to see the areas that you have mentioned.
Again, thank you all for the information.

Hi.
We can assume Andreas born 1860 died young since a new Andreas/Andrew was born 1866 in Minnesota.

Marthe Marie /Mary.
The family used Marte in Norway, see vaccination against smallpox July 12. 1858, Marthe age 2 and Olai/Ole age 1/2, see #59 & 60

Visit Norway on cruice, I hope you can visit Sognefjord where the location of Viksĝyri and Sogndal are ab. in the middle of the fjord and Lĉrdal in the inner part, see this map

The reason Ragnild was changed to Rognelda in USA is because of the pronunciation of the alphabet, it´s quite different.

Anders Johanesen was baptized Dec 13 1798, see 3rd baptism on right page.
Parents Johanes Thomasen, Amble and Kari Andersdatter.

Johannes Thommesen, Amble and Kari Andersdatter, Olstad were married Oct 24 1785, see end of right page.

Johans Thomasen was baptized June 10 1752, see top of 3rd column. His parents were Thomas Joensen, Arvold and Kari Villumsdatter.

See Amble (Amle) and Olstad in this map. Zoom to see more of the Sognefjorden area.

Hi
On our cruise, Oceania Insight (ship), we will stop in Norway at Hellesylt, Geiranger, Alesund, Flam, Bergen, Stavanger and Oslo. So we will be all around the Sognefiord area - just not close enough.
I hope to come back soon for a trip on land. I am 75 years old this week so I need to come back SOON.

Christian, my grandfather, whom I called "Doctor" went to medical school in Chicago and then came to the state of New Mexico. He met my grandmother, Lena Booth, there. They married and live in Manzano, NM; then Mountainair, NM. He was in the state legislature in 1939. They moved to Albuquerque, NM where he died in 1947. He never did retire. Kept seeing patients.I was interested to see apples around that area. He loved apples and would peel them with one long peel!

The man, Anders Johanesen,Amble, baptized in 1798, was probably the great grandfather, then, of my grandfather and Kari Andersdatter his great grandmother?
