Oops! that was not right. Johannes Thommesen, Amble and Kari Andersdatter were the parents of Anders Johanesen and he was the father of Johannes Anderson - my grandfather's father!

I need to get this in tree form so I can see all that you have done for us. My sister, my daughter and my husband are all going on the cruise also. I have sent your messages to my sister and daughter and they are so happy to see all this news, also!

Hi.
Visiting Flåm in the inner part of Geirangerfjord, a branch to Sognefjord, you will pass Viksøyri on right hand and Sogndal to the left across the fjord when the ship turn into the Geirangerfjord.

North from Sogndal is Kaupanger where farm Amble is located and Kaupanger stave church where Johannes Andersen Amble was christened August 8. 1824.

Apropo apples:
This area besides the nature is famous for fruit and berries, Sogndal is called "Saftbygda" the Juice village of Norway.

There were two Johannes Andersen Amble born ab. 1824 in Sogn.
One settled down in Eastern Norway and your ancestor em. from Sogn ab. 1863-65.

No wonder that your mother mentioned Oslo.

Johannes Andersen Amble age 19 mentioned above moved out of Sogndal Feb. 20.1844 for Lillehammer, see right page 1844 #3

He married Christine Olsdatter Sept. 22. 1854, se couple #20, 1 son Ole born 1854.
Johannes Andersen Amble married as widower Mari Arnesdatter b. 1841 from Øier municipality at Lillehammer Nov. 4. 1863.
4 children;
Anna 1866, Karen 1869, Arnt 1874 and Jørgine 1882.

Johannes was cantor and schoolteacher and settled down in Frogn municipality, Akershus county at Oslo
Johannes Amble, retired cantor and schoolteacher and wife Mari Amble in Frogn 1900

Probably Anders Christensen as his father in the wedding record is correct.

In the wedding record from Lærdal April 15.1856 his father is recorded as Anders Christensen.
There were two Johannes Andersen Amble in Sogn, one of them moved out of Sogndal and settled down in Lillehammer 1844.
Who was his father?

A possible candidate for his father is Anders Christensen Amble married in Kaupanger to Marithe Lassedatter Aaberge April 25. 1813, last wedding right page here

The wedding record #7 is not for the one who moved to Lillehammer and later on as you have found ends up in Frogn. His father may very well be Anders Christensen.

The wedding record is for the other Johannes Andersen, Amble showing his marriage to Ragnilde Lassesdatter and who later is found in US with family. The father of this Johannes Andersen Amble is more likely Anders Johannesen as found at his baptismal record.

Yes, OUR Johannes was definitely married to Ragnilde. We have her with the family in the 1880 census in MN. Her burial in Frost, MN.

Our ship is not Insight but "Insignia" ! We go to Geirangerfjord the same day(16 June) that we go to Hellesylt. Not from Flam.
We are scheduled to ride the railway in Flam (18 June).

Hi.
There is no doubt this is the right family Barbara.

I want to be as sure possible about the question;
who was Johannes Andersen Amble´s father;
Anders Johannesen Amble or Anders Christensen Amble, both on Øvre (Upper) Amble in 1801
- nr 2297 Anders Johannesen age 3
- nr 2352 Anders Christensen age 8

Who was the father to Johannes Andersen Amble who emigrated fom Amble in Sogndal to Lillehammer in 1844.

The wedding record from Lærdal when he married Ragnild Lassedatter 1856 tells his father was Anders Christensen.

It seems to me that the following records indicate that Johannes Andersens father Anders Christensen in the marriage record is not correct:
From confirmation record Kopanger Aug 12 1838, #4
Johannes Andersen, Amble, baptized Aug 8 1824, born at Hove, parents Anders Johannesen and Anna Olsdatter.

From marriage record Lærdal April 15 1856, #7
Johannes Andersen, Amble 32 years and Ragnilde Lassesdatter, Fosseim 27 years, Johannes Andersens father said to be Anders Christensen (was more likely Anders Johannesen), Ragnilde Lassesdatters father was Lasse Tørrisen.

From baptismal record Sogndal #66
Johannes, uægte born July 29 1824, baptized Aug 8 1824
mother Anna Olsdatter, Hove, father Anders Johannesen, Ambledalen.

Not likely untrue, espesially if Johannes was the eldest son named after his grandfather (fathers father) Johannes (Traditional Norwegian naming practices), but until the parents of his namesake who traveled to Lillehamer 1844 is clarified, I am somewhat hesitant.

Perhaps the answer exist here in the "Bygdebok" for Sogndal, 4 volumes

Oh my. I do wish that I could read the Norwegian language. I need a language lesson or more!
I like the chain of names that you sent yesterday. John (father of Christian, et al) and then his father, Anders Johannes, his father; Anders Johaneson then Johannes Thommesen.

Hi Barbara (have an older sis with same name)!
Yes, you are getting a late start. It took me a couple months to learn about the name changes for researching my parent's families.
You could try this for small amounts of translation:

and there are some good links on line for basic Norwegian words and phrases. I'm sure these members will help you out, or just start doing some searches....

lykke til
