Hi, I'm new to this Fourm so I hope this is the right time and place to ask this...

My Great-Grandfather, Albert Blehr (b1853) emigrated to Canada in the 1870s, probably through Halifax Nova Scotia but possibly through Quebec City or even New York(???). He ended up in Sydney, Nova Scotia. Originally I was told he was from Hamar, Norway but I haven't been able to prove that and Telemark (is that a region?) seems to show up in earlier relations.

His parents were Albert Blehr (b1805) and Maren Stenersen (b1818). I believe they were married in 1837 in Vang, Hedmark, Norway. My Great-Grandfather's brother was apparently Otto Blehr and he is supposed to have been the first Prime Minister of Norway when it separated from Norway. I haven't even been able to confirm that fact and it should have been easy, I would have thought. In fact I haven't been able to find any information on my Great-Grandfatheror, his generation of syblings or their descendants.

If anyone an give me any ideas, information or sugggestions I'd be grateful. Again, I hope this is the appropriate forum to post this question and apologize if out of order.

This seams to be the family in the 1865 census:

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=arkivverket/ft1865/f60417&postnr=578&spraak=e

It shows Albert Bleher, a physician, at the Sanderud, Blaarud form in Ottestad, Stange with his family and household. There seams to be only 27 persons going by the surname Bleher in Norway in 1865.

Here is a site that lists all the kings and prime mnisters of Norway. There is a Blehr and Bahr, both about the same time, both Ottos. I used Google to search so you can put his name in and Norway too like....Otto Blehr + Norway. There are quite a few sites. Elaine

Hi ! don't know if u r still active here, bur here are som information about the Blehr and Stenersen and Waalen families in case u have not got that already?; Your Great-Grandfather, Albert Blehr (b1853) was a brother of Otto Blehr (1847-1927) who was primeminister in Norway from 1902 to 1903 and also from 1921-1923. Since they have the same parents; Albert Blehr (1805-1872) and Maren L.W.C. Blehr, born Stenersen, (1818-1877). Albert Blehr was a physician, was head of the medical sevices in the county Hedemark, they lived in Hamar/Stange, Norway. Maren Stenersen was doughter of Christopher Stenersen (1787-1880), Blæstad, Vang, Hedemark (married Anne Dorothea Boegh,1794-1846). C. Stenersen was son of Hans Emaus Stenersen (1756-1827), owner of the Dvergsten farm, Gran, Hadeland, and was married to Mari Olsen (1767-1855) from Moe, Jevnaker. They were cousins. H.E.Stenersen's father was Christopher Stenersen (1719-1799). He married Berte Bentsdoughter Dvergsten and got owner of Dvergsten farm. Ch. Stenersen came from Waalen farm in Gausdal and was son of John S. Waalen (1690-1746). I'm myself from Waalen in Gausdal, so in that way we must be relatives pharhaps in the 8th generation? Hope to hear from u if u'r still using this page. Best regards Kristian W.

You might be interested in some more information on Otto Albert Blehr (1847-1927). Blehr was a leading politician in the Left Party (Venstre), and he served in the Norwegian Parliament from 1883-88. He was instrumental in getting several important reforms through Parliament. At this time Norway was in a union with Sweden, but she had her own Parliament and Prime Minister. In 1891 Blehr became Prime Minister, serving until that government resigned in 1893. From 1895-1900 he again served in Parliament, and he was also active in the process that eventually led to the dissolution of the union between Sweden and Norway. Norway became an independent country in 1905, celebrating 100 years of freedom last year. During the dramatic 3-4 years before the dissolution, Blehr again served as Norwegian Prime Minister and also Head of the Government . Following Norwegian independence, he served as Minister of Finance in 1915, Minister of Justice 1917-1920, and held other important posts. His wife, Randi Marie Nilsen Blehr (1851-1928), was equally important in Norwegian public life. Together with Gina Krog, she founded the Norwegian Women's Liberation Society and served as its president for many years. She made another mark as a peace activist, and she also founded the first school for tapestry weaving in Norway in 1880.

Kristian,

I tried to send you an email to learn more about the information you have, but the email I sent bounced back to me. If you are still online, I'd be interesting in hearing more information about the Blehr's in Norway. My email address is kda0479@yahoo.ca. I am Rick Booth's second cousin, once removed.... so I guess that makes us very distant relatives as well.

Hi Rick,
I just discovered this great website while searching for my great grandfather, Albert Blehr. I was trying to find out when and where he arrived in Canada. He was my grandmother, Henrikka Louise Blehr's father. He died in Sydney, where I was born.

I know that your relative, Percy Booth, lived in Hazel Hill, and came from England to run the cable station. Donald Blehr, Albert's son also lived in Hazel Hill.

Let me know what other information you would like to have.
