I have been told that my great grandfather, Ole Jacobsen, left Norway at age 16 by ship that sailed to Africa. He left the ship in Durban, South Africa. This would have been between about 1860 and 1880. Can anyone help please?

Welcome to the forum!

Hmmm...

Common name, wide time frame, any idea of parish, county, more accurate year of birth..?

Candidate:
Ole Ambrosius who were at sea in 1865, see census.
He was born Febr 2 1848, see #72.
If he left Norway at the age of 16, this would have been in 1864.

Oh my word, I think this is the one! I had only his name and date of death as 30-Dec-1923! Can this be possible, so quickly?! How can I find out more to confirm? I have my great grandmother, my Ole's wife as Jane. Their children were: (Sarah) Hilda,
Harriet, Frederick (died in France WW1) and my grandfather William Richard who married Rachel Gertrude Brown

No doubt it's the right person!

The challenge now would be to connect him to the right family in Norway.
He should be born ab. 1850 in or around Tromsų city, Troms county.
Ole listed above could be a possibility. Have you ever seen any familymember by the name Ambrosius or Ambrosia?
Parish christening records from the area are available, and also census-1865.

Jan Peter, I am so excited and thankful to you! No, the names Ambrosius or Ambrosia have not been passed on. Rather sad, but the name Ole was used as a second name for William and Rachel's first born son. I think eibache's post gives a birth date of Feb 2, 1848. I have looked at the Parish record but will need a strong magnifier to make out the writing. The 1865 census tells me Ole was a seafarer. Ole and Jane's son William Richard, my grandfather, was born in 1887, the next son in 1891. Sadly, I do not have the birth years of the 2 sisters.
Since I am new to this, please can you advise how to go about linking him to the right family in Norway?
Thank you
Norma

Hi,
you can magnify the Parish record by using the menu at the top of the page.
Ambrosius is quite a rare name, and came from his mother, who was named Marie Ambrosia.
I think that name could have been passed on to later generations..., thats why I was questioning if Ole Ambrosius born Febr 2 1848 is your Ole Jacobsen.
He could be your guy, but more proof are needed to verify the connection.

Ole Jacobsen is quite a common name, and there are about 7 persons born 1847-1853 in the 1865-census for Troms county which could fit.
Ole Ambrosius is the best match. He is the only one born in Tromsų city.

Hi, okay, perhaps this is not "my" Ole! It seems that Ole Ambrosius married and raised children with Julie.
I will look at your other suggestions. All we have though, is the agreed date of death in Durban, South Africa.
The search continues?
Thanks Jan Peter

Hi,

Just for the sake of curiosity, what is the source (eg. family tradition, death certificate, obituary, estate settlement papers, or what?) of the date of death you have for your great grandfather?

Hi Jackie, the date of death was recorded in the "family bible" by my grandmother (Rachel Jacobsen). She wrote "in loving memory of Ole Jacobsen, died Dec 30th 1923"
The next record she wrote "in loving memory of Jane Jacobsen died July 18th 1926"
It seems too much of a coincidence that Ole Ambrosius Jacobsen is recorded as dying in Durban, Dec 30th 1923?
Would be grateful for any and all input, I am a novice at this!

Ole Ambrosius Jacobsen is NOT recorded as dying in Durban in 1923. The name of the deceased person is recorded as "Ole Jacobsen, married, 73 y.o., born Tromsų, Norway, Residence Durban, Dead 30-Dec-1923".

"Ole Ambrosius Jacobsen" was just a candidate (a wild shot) about a possible match from Tromsų, but it looks like this wild shot was a miss, given that O.A.J. is married with 2 children in census-1875.
As said in a previous posting, there are about 7 people in the Norwegian 1865-census that could fit with your Ole. It could be one of those, or he could have left the country before the census was taken (January 1866).
