Hi, Østen Olson Vike vas b. ocktober 18, 1893 in Aakre Skånevik. He went to Roland, Story Co. Iowa for the first time 1910, was going to an uncle. He return to Norway and married and had children. September 19. 1924 he was going to Roland for the second time ( seeking employment), he went by NAL.
A bit strange, his son found his backpack on a hill after he had left. Are there a possibility to see if he had lived in Roland, Iowa, perhaps in 1930 census. Other people from the Vike farm often use Viicks as surename. Thank you in advance, Magnar.

Oistein O. Wike (30) from Skaanevik, Norway, arrived New York on The Stavangerfjord on Sep 29th, 1924. Destination was friend Hagtor Wike in Roland, IA.
He looks to be travelling with Knut J. Øvstebø (17), also from Skaanevik. His destination was Kanawha, IA.

Hi,

Maybe someone on forum has access to Ancestry. There is a 1925 Iowa State Census in which your grandfather target might be listed. If Austin Wicks in Washington was indeed yours, perhaps he filed to become a citizen. There is a nice database at Ancestry for Washington naturalizations.

You could try for an obituary for Austin Wicks. The service is free from the Washington State Library:

Quite a few persons of the Vike and Vik farms in Skånevik took Wicks or Weeks as American family names.

For example,
Tørres Tørresen Vike (b. 30 Mar 1861) was later known as Thomas Wicks in the US.
Viar Viarsen Vik/Vig (b. 8 May 1840) was later known as Wier W. Weeks in the Roland town area of Story Co. Iowa, US.

Those with access to Ancestry.com might check the 1925 Iowa State census to see if Østen/Austin was still in the area of Roland just one year after he made that second voyage.

Roland is in Howard township of Story County, Iowa.
Kanawha is in Hancock Co. Iowa (I think in Amsterdam township) and is quite close to the Wright County line.

Quite a few Skånevik people were found in Story County and in north central Iowa.

Good websites for information from some of those areas -

Hi,

If the SSDI Austin Wicks is the same as target, likely he was in Iowa in both the 1925 Iowa State Census and 1930 US Federal as his SSN was issued in Iowa.

This page talks about one Austin Wicks and that his family came from Skanevik Norway.

But it could be Wicks Austin H born 5/23/1882 in Kendall, Illinois to parents Hactor Hactorsen and Guri Tallaksd of 1212 Skaanevig, Vike farm Norway.

"Hactor Hactorsen" could possibly be Østen Olson Vike's destination in 1924? ("Hagtor Wike in Roland, IA.")

Hi, and thank you. Haktor haktorsen Vike was born 1817 and went to US before Østen Olsen was born, He also had a son Haktor b. Norway 1863. i haven't been able to work out if there were relationship. There were also others Haktors who went to US from the Vike or Vika farm.
It could have been people Østen met at his first time in Roland. Magnar.

There was a Haktor T. Wicks in Roland, Story Co., Iowa. He was born "Haktor Torjusson" (spelling from Iowa notes) 1846 in Skånevik, emigrated to the US in 1870 and died 1924. He is buried in Roland Cemetery.
His widow Madela (Tørresdotter) continued to live there until her death in 1932.
This "Haktor Wicks" was the son of "Torjus Haktorssen Vike" and "Kristi Sjursdatter Kvandal" (again, Iowa spellings).

There was also another "Hector P. Wicks" (1848-1930) in Kendall Grundy Co. Illinois and one of his sons brothers married a member of my extended family there. I've never tracked the entire Wicks family but have notes on some of them.

Hi Hopkins, You mentioned Hactor P. Wicks above, he was 1st. cousin of Haktor T. Wicks and nephew of Haktor H. Wicks on the picture, all those Haktors belong to the same Vike family.
Seems to me that many of the Vike folks have settled in the Roland area. No doubt, Østen Olsen Vike was almost at home.
Magnar.

Yes, Norwegians with roots in Skånevik, Fjelberg and Ølen were very well represented in the Story Co. area. It was one of the areas of early Norwegian settlements west of the Mississippi River. East of the big river many first stopped in northern Illinois in the general area of the Fox River valley.

I looked back today through my own notes of Wicks and Weeks families and recognized that many of these must have been cousins of some sort. I also noticed that Hactor T. Wicks' wife Madela was a sister of Tørres Tørresen Vike (Thomas Wicks). The relationships could get quite dizzying for a beginner.
