Hi,

Here is an Austin Wicks, probably/possibly from the first American trip, from the 1910 census, at www.familysearch.org. Who is Gurina Wicks?:

Name: Austin Wicks
Birthplace: Norway
Relationship to Head of Household:
Residence: Scott, Hamilton, Iowa
Marital Status: Single
Race : White
Gender: Male
Immigration Year:
Father's Birthplace: Norway
Mother's Birthplace: Norway
Family Number: 63
Page Number: 4
Household Gender Age
Henry Twedt M 33y
Isabelle Twedt F 30y
Lenard Twedt M 10y
Gurine Twedt F 9y
Harris Twedt M 3y
Austin Wicks M 16y
Gurina Wicks F 24y

I've checked a few places for Austin Wicks and not found him:
www.mncounty,com
www.greatriversnetwork.com
marriage database at Washington State Secretary of State Digital Archives

Here is an older (2004) database containing information on Henry Twedt family--wife's name is given as Isabelle Wicks.

http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:2878178&id=I569407672

Here is Isabelle Twedt's record at www.findagrave.net:
www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=twedt&GSfn=isabelle&GSbyrel=all&GSdyrel=all&GSob=n&GRid=50096789&df=all&" target="_blank">http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=twedt&GSfn=isabelle&GSbyrel=all&GSdyrel=all&GSob=n&GRid=50096789&df=all&

Hilsen on the 4th,

Hi, and thank you both. Jackie M. I do think I know who Gurina Wicks was, she was sister in law of Henry Twedt ( Valgjerd Gurine Wike, US 1892). I have a Henry Twedt married to Ingeborg Larsdatter Vike. In fact Ingeborg and Gurine were half sisters. Magnar.

Hi, Sorry that I forgot about the 4th. of July. Here comes a belated congratulation. I happened to stay in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania a 4th. of July once. The great parades very much impressed an young Norwegian sailor from rural Kvinnherad who had not seen things lake that. Magnar.

Hi Magnar,

Interesting connections in Roland. In the database and findagrave this Isabelle (Ingeborg) Wicks is listed as a daughter of Hagtor Torjusson and Madela Wicks, born in Iowa, not a Larsdatter at all. Census gives Norway as birthplace Hmmm.

One other record you could get on Austin Wicks would be his Social Security Application (SS5). He probably applied in the late 30s or 40s. It's spendy though (about $35).

Hilsen,
Jackie M.

Hi Magnar,

Thanks for 4th greeting. We had a few activities during the day but fireworks at night undone and outdone by Mother Nature, lightning, hail, wind, rain and tornado. Hard to compete with that.

Hi Jackie, I want say sorry this time. Have notes which tells that Isabelle ( Ingeborg) Wicks b. november 8. 1879 in Vike, Skånevik married Henry H. Twedt in Iowa. Henry was son of Hans Johonson Twedt and his second marriage to Gøri Ersland. Hans J. Twedt and first wife Abella Helvig came to Story County 1856, do hope this is correct. Mvh Magnar.

Hi Magnar,

No reason to be sorry. The folks you differ from re Ingeborg / Isabelle Wicks' parentage are those who have mounted the 2 gedcom at www.rootsweb.com and have put in the family information at findagrave. You will have to "duke" it out with them. I don't know what documentation there is for either position, having only superficially examined records on her.

I was curious about Gurina to see if she might have been a relative of Austin Wicks, since his emigration record in the Norwegian lists says he is traveling to his uncle in 1910. So he may have been nephew to Henry or Isabelle and mayhaps Gurina might be a relative to Austin as well. Apparently not but it does underline the interconnectedness of the emigrees from Skaanevik by blood and name.

Hilsen,
Jackie M.

From Story Co. many Norwegians moved north to areas like Hamilton Co., Wright Co., and Humboldt Co. Iowa where other Norwegian emigrants had started settlements. It wasn't far in comparison to having already traveled half way west across the North American continent and having made the dangerous voyage across the Atlantic ocean.

My own various family links from Kvinnherad ended up in Wright and Humboldt Counties marrying the children of other Norwegian emigrants from areas like Ullensvang, Jevnaker, etc. Those were areas where emigrants from a number of various Norwegian areas all merged into one or two small communities. Some of them first settled in the Story Co. area but then moved north to farming areas less crowded.

Alas, in my own family background I don't find any links to Hjelmeland farm... so I am unable to find easy links to our friend Magnar. But IF he already knows Odd Braathun then he and I might have mutual friends and/or relatives.

----------------
Hans J. Twedt (1825-1901) and his two wives are covered in the "Norwegians In Central Iowa Registry Entry" database of the website I recommended earlier in this thread.

Hi,

Found no obituary for Austin Wicks in the Rowberg Biographical File. Did, however find one for Mrs. Henry Twedt. It was published in the Roland Iowa Record May 1, 1935. An abstraction about her origins:

"...Mrs. Henry H. Twedt (nee Isabelle Wicks) was born November 8, 1879 at Skaanevik, Norway, and died at her home north of Roland April 22, 1935, at the age of 55 years, 5 months and 14 days.

She came to America with her parents in June, 1892 and has lived in this community since that time....

...She is also survived by her husband, her parents Mr. and Mrs. Ole A Wicks of this place, two brothers Torger Wicks of Kanawha, and Lars Wicks of Roland, a sister Alice Wicks of Roland, and also nine grandchildren...."

So it would be best to get obituary for Austin Wicks through the Washington State Library program online, mentioned before. It's free and if they find an obit for you they will send as a PDF attachment to email. There is a lot of use and the search may take 6 weeks to receive reply.

Good Luck,

Jackie M.

Thank you Jackie,

Good to see that we have the right Ingeborg married to Henry Twedt. I did check the church records of Skånevik and found only our Ingeborg born that day.
Ole A. Wicks was not her father, Ingeborg's mother Lisbet was first married to Lars Torgeirson Vike. He was 66 and Lisbet was 19 years old. She also had a child out of wedlock, Torger probably the one who liwed in Kanawha, more understandable why she married the old one.
Will see if Austin Wicks descendants like to ask for a obituary.
These people are friends of my wife. Thank you Magnar.

Thank you Hopkins,

How are you, I spent most of the day at your forfathers Fedt farm. This community has a safe haven for smaller boats at the Fedt farm. Pretty sure your folks have been fishing out there.
Don't know if you remeber that I was searching for a great grand uncle. I am happy to tell that I am in touch with descendants. Thank you to you and those others who were helping me, and also to this site. When fall get closer I may be be back searching for neighbours who settled in Calamus, Clinton. Mvh, Magnar.
