Hi,

William Franky's parents' wedding date is given in his baptismal record as 9 Sept 1895. It matches the marriage information of Bertha Berger and Gustave A Gustaveson in Kings County, New York found in the marriage database at the Itallian Genealogical Group web page:

Berger Bertha Sep 9 1895 4198 Kings B626

William Franky Stevenson (b 1896) is not a particularly appropriate candidate to be Ola Stevenson's father--age / birthdate is outside of the 1870-1880 time frame (pending other information), birthplace doesnot appear to be Bergen, parents are clearly not as recorded in Australia (William Fraser Stevenson and Gwendolin Olga Watson / Matson) And if he is the same William Franky Stevenson b 1896 d 1970 of Trondhjem mentioned by Hans Jacob, then he didn't die in Australia in 1942, whatever other details or generalities match.

Hi Ola,

Have you looked at this site (Australian newspapers online)?:

http://trove.nla.gov.au/

I see there is at least one newspaper for Brisbane there If you haven't already looked an obituary for William would be extremely helpful...

So do I!

How ironic it would be to find that my grandfather left NZ (i.e. not far from Australia) to go to UK, then his son (born in Bergen) came back this way!

My heart skipped a beat when I saw this name ... then I realised that it was not William Fraser Stevenson, but William Stevenson Fraser!

Thank you for that link, Jackie. I was not aware of it and will have a good look through it.

Oh dear, it seems I made too many posts too quickly and got told off for 'flood control'. Sorry.

I am actually not at all familiar with computers or the Internet, so my good friend, Chris, is helping me with this. My apologies for anything we've done wrong.

We're both also feeling quite overwhelmed by all the information you are all finding and don't really know what to say in most cases.

P.S. Chris likes smilies!

G'day,

Jackie, that 'Trove' link you let me know about certainly does hold a wealth of information! I have even found the newspaper notice about my graduation from school!

Unfortunately, I have not yet found anything about either my father's or mother's deaths (I tried both, hoping for more info) nor their marriage. I have still not found the hard copies of the paperwork either. If I cannot find these soon, I will consider ordering copies from the Queensland Registrar, depending on the cost. I do not have a lot of my pension to spare, but will try.

If I can find out any more information from Australia (or anywhere!), I will add it to here.

Thanks for your continuing help, everyone.

Ola

Hi Ola,

Well cool. Sorry that the site didn't contain helpful information. One thing I learned there is that a Norwegian man of the name Hans Larsgaard also had an Australian name of "Leslie Darney" Who'd've thought that ?

Your original post contained info about your father William Stevenson. Is that from a paper document or from an online index? If it is just from an online index of some sort you might also consider getting the hard copy document of it as well. The same era death certs from my area have 25 spots of information--including things like who the informant was, name of cemetery and funeral home if one was used. If your folks were churchly, it might be worth contacting their church as sometimes there are records there as well

Your name might also give you a clue, too. Maybe William Stevenson was an assumed name and he was actually Ola Syverson, and your name was to perpetuate the memory of time gone by. That circumstance is also something possible that will also have to be considered, since, so far, records of William Stevenson in Norway are few and far between.
