Hi
I have found 2 graves in the Kvitnes cemetery in Nordland/Hadsel which I know one is my ancestor Edmund Chalmer born 8/7/1885 in Haugsund, died 5/3/1964 Kvitnes. His parents are Thomas Chalmer and Augusta Olava Ohlsen and I have Edmund ,his mother and his sister and her family in Drobak on 1900 census.Right next to his grave is a headstone for Edel Chalmer born 26/6/1892, died 30/1/1959. Is she his wife?, I googled Edel and an article said farm at kvitnes owned by Edel Chalmer British businessman.
I have been on the Norway National Library site and searched Edel Chalmer and there are references to him/her in a few books and after using my translating wed tool is appears Edel is Edmunds wife. Could someone please be kind enough to confirm if she is his wife. Edmund was arrested by the Germans in ww2 as he was British and on his farm there was a radio used to send info back to England on what the Germans were up to.
Many thanks Shirley in NZ |

Hi,
Or a cousin since the grandfather Edmund Chalmer had such a fantastically large family (20 kids)!
However, in US the name Edel is usually a female name....

Edel is buried next to Edmund, and they are the last two graves in that row. I would say chances are high that she was his wife.
You should contact the churchwarden.
The Englishman Edel Chalmer in Kvitnes could be a namesake.

Hi
Here is an Edel born on 26 June 1892 from the Norwegian 1910 census. Interesting she is from Kvitnĉs....

I guess this also makes me wonder about the cemetery or headstone transcription you found . Could it be in error, as in continuation error or some such?

Hi All
Kaarto, that was the article I found and started the confusion as to male/female. I can only find him on 1900 census and he is not on UK census
jkmarler, thanks for 1910 census for Edel.
GREAT NEWS while reading these, my cousin emailed me and her contact has found that Edel is Edmunds wife, they state in papers he was Britsh but he was born in Norway, cant find duel birth in UK. So at last this is solved as to who Edel was.
Thanks Shirley |

Edel Ellingsen which Jackie found above was of fine family. Her father was Carl Martin Ellingsen, born 20-Dec-1848, a trademan on Kvitnes in Vesterċlen. He was much employed in public and various municipal offices, a mayor, a member of a number of public committees and representing Nordland county in the Parlament from 1886 88, 89 91 and 95-97. Married 15-Jul-1878 to Gunhild Beate Singdahlsen, born 18-Jan-1853 in Larvik.
This tree have nothing about Edels' faith... http://www.ofstad.info/d0101/g0000060.html#I97682
