I am trying to find information regarding the steamship Hungarian that ran aground in 1859. I am in the process of acquiring information about some relatives of mine that were on that ship that died. I am also trying to find a book that was written by Arthur Thurston called (The Wreck of the Steamship Hungarian on the Ledges of Cape Sable Nova Scotia)
I can't find this book anywhere and thought I would ask if you may have any pertinent information regarding this tragic shipwreck.
I am aslo looking for the passenger list for the SS Hungarian.
Please help, I have been looking for years, trying to find any info.

This is what Sue Swiggum on has on TSL web site about the ship from N.R.P. Bonsor's book "North Atlantic Seaway, vol.1, p.308:
2,200 gross tons, length 298ft x beam 38.1ft, clipper bows, one funnel, three masts, iron hull, single screw, speed 10 knots, accommodation for 151-1st and 332-3rd class passengers. Launched on 25th Sep.1858 by Wm. Denny & Bros, Dumbarton for the Allan Line, she started her maiden voyage on 18th May 1859 when she left Liverpool for Quebec and Montreal. On 19th Feb.1860 she was wrecked on [Cape] Sable Island, N.S. with the loss of 237 lives.
Is this the kind of info you are looking for or is it something else?

It has information about the ship & a partial list of the crew & passengers. Hopefully this will help. I also have a picture of the ship that I found in a history book so if you would like a copy please let me know & I'll scan it & send it to you.

 Hey my name is robert stewart and i live on, ironicaly, cape sable island, NS. and i am a really big history buff.lol. i know alot more than alot about this topic so i will be happy to help you! If you have anything that i can help you with, just email me at chipndill911@yahoo.ca and if i don't know the answer, chances are, others might not either. If i have a problem, the museum down the road has models and old records and i can access the Cape Sable Island Historical Society any time. I have did numerous projects on the Hungarian, and actualy have a peice of her cargo. Email me any time! |

Hello all
I just wanted to clarify that the Hungarian was lost off Cape Sable which is the southern tip of Nova Scotia. This should not be confused with Cape Sable Island which is east of Nova Scotia.
I have a picture of the ship. I will gather all of the information that I have on the shiprwreck. Does anyone have a suggestion where the best place would be to post the information? Should I create a new message on this board with all the details that I have?
The reason that I am so interested in this ship is that my gg grandfather was list on the ship.
