Britha Gudmundsdtr. Sandsberg, b. 07. dec. 1820 at the Bratt-Hetland farm, Fister, Hjelmeland, Norway. She came with pa rents Gudmund Osmundson Sandsberg 1787-1840 and wife Mari/Mary Pedersdtr. 1796- (1836?) to Orleans County, New York in 1829 - after sailing with ship SALEM from Gutenburg, Sweden. Later moving to LaSalle Co., IL. Britha m. John LOTT, b. ca. 1813 in Canada - about 1842. The family are listed living in Ottawa twp., LaSalle Co., IL - in 1850, with children. Charles H Lott, b. 1843, Alice G. Lott, b. 1847 and Emma Lott, b. 1850- all b. in Illinois, probably in LaSalle county. The family are not listed here in 1860. Anyone having further info for this family. Perhaps they moved to Canada ?

Census 1880 for Chicago, Cook, Illinois shows one Bertha Tupper, born ab 1827 in Norway.
Just below is Emma THOMASS born ab 1854 in Illinois, with mother born in Norway, and father born in Canada. Relationship to Samuel & Bertha Tupper is listed as "other"...

Any chances this could be Britha Lott and daughter Emma?

I found a death of a Charles H. Lott in the Illinois Death Index. Died July 8, 1933. Danville, Vermillion Co., Illinois. There are three Emma Lott's, but you didn't list a middle initial for her. Two are in Chicago and the other in Elgin.

Jan Peter,
On the original 1880 Census, I can see that Samuel and Bertha Tupper are listed as only being married once. As is, Emma Thomas. Emma is listed as a Boarder. Unless, John Lott, somehow became Samuel Tupper, I don't think this is the same family.

Then Emma married Fred Thomas and some of them living together and still in Chicago in 1880. Fits well with what Jackie and Jan Peter found. Even if Bertha says she was married only once on this form it still seems the best fit. Also Samuel Tupper is listed as having been born in Nova Scotia. And John Lott was born in Canada as well.

Census-1880 list Alice's mother as being born in Norway, father born in Canada.

Census-1900 list Alice as a widow in Seattle city, King, Washington. But: Born Jul 1854, and father born in France. Mother born in Norway.

Hi,

At familysearch.org is a browsable collection of probate records from Illinois. Here is the index page which shows a John Lott in Champaign County. On page 19 is the administrators bond which has an affirmation date of 8 Feb 1853. Perhaps this is the appropriate John Lott....

Quick question. Where did Bertha get the last name Fitzgerald, that was listed on the marriage record of Samuel Tupper and Bertha Fitzgerald? Shouldn't it have been Lott or Gudmansdatters? Maybe Samuel was her 3rd marriage?

Hi,

I don't really know. Did she pick up another husband along the way? Or is it something a little more mundane such as a ghastly interpretation of Gudmundsdatter Sandsberg? If someone sees the actual register perhaps that will be revealed...
