Can anyone help with this? My great grandmother's brother Hans Hansen Myhre, born 16 Dec 1870 in Nes, Norway, emigrated on April 5 1889 from Oslo/Christiania via Hull. I believe he might be the same Hans Hansen who arrived in Quebec on May 8 aboard the "Toronto" - here is stated as having an onward ticket to Chicago, but there ends all my leads. As there seem to be a lot of Myhre's in the Edgerton area still today, I suppose he made it there in the end, but then again Hans Myhre is a fairly common name...Does anyone know anything more about his fate? |

I think that a better candidate for your Hans Myhre is the following person. One of the reasons for my thinking that this person is a better fit is that if the Hans H Myhre shown above in the Emigrants fra Oslo is correct, on that same list is the family of Ole Pedersen, with wife and two children. Those four people are also found on this ship. The original could easily be read as Hans H Myhre as well as the Mybro that the transcriber came up with. Also this Hans has as his final destination Wisconsin.
Name: Hans H Mybro Arrival Date: 22 Apr 1889 Age: 18 Years Estimated Birth Year: abt 1871 Gender: Male Port of Departure: Liverpool, England Ship Name: British King Port of Arrival: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Thanks, I believe Hans H Mybro must be the one; my candidate definitely left Oslo on 5 April, so it sounds reasonable that he followed the Pedersen family to Philadelphia and the went on to Wisconsin. His birthplace was in Nes, Hedmark, Norway, so no link to Hallingdal, unfortunately. Still grateful for any information anyone may have about descendants/family in the Edgerton area. Thanks for all your help so far! |

Under the name Hans Myhre there are very few people who fit the birth year of 1870 and arrival year of 1889. None of them are in Wisconsin. The best fit is shown below. The problem I am having is that I cannot locate this family in the 1910 US Census even tho all of the children and there are many were born in North Dakkota.
Name: Hans Myhre [Hans Miksa] Home in 1920: Lawton, Ramsey, North Dakota Age: 49 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1871 Birthplace: Norway Relation to Head of House: Self (Head) [Head] Father's Birth Place: Norway Mother's Birth Place: Norway Marital Status: Married Race: White Sex: Male Home owned: Own Year of immigration: 1890
Household Members: Name Age Hans Myhre 49 Clara Myhre 17 Otis Myhre 15 Chester Myhre 13 Bastian Myhre 13 Inez Myhre 11 Ulysses Myhre 9

The second candidate is Hans E Myer who fits fairly closely to your Hans H Myhre. He is found in Iowa, However he did marry a girl from Columbia County Wisconsin which is quite close to both Rock and Dane Counties. It will take some further work to see if we can determine which of these two fit your Hans H Myhre.
Name: Hans E Myhre Home in 1900: Badger, Webster, Iowa Age: 30 Birth Date: Jul 1869 Birthplace: Norway Race: White Gender: Male Immigration Year: 1888 Relationship to head-of-house: Head Father's Birthplace: Norway Mother's Birthplace: Norway Spouse's Name: Emma Myhre Marriage year: 1894 Marital Status: Married Years married: 6 Household Members: Name Age Hans E Myhre 30 Emma Myhre 30 Eva M Myhre 3 Hazel Myhre 1 Mary O Brects 74

Just something to keep in mind. Another spelling in the U.S. is Myhra. My great uncle Otto Myhra came from Norway and we had both Myhra's and Myhre's in the area where I lived in central Wisconsin. Both Portage and Waupaca counties. No, Hans H. Myhre, though. The closest I found was a Hans Anderson Myhre from Ringbu, Norway. |

Here is Hans Myhre from Ramsey County North Dakota in 1930 US Census. All of the children have left home and his wife Ida is now living with him. In the 1920 Census she was in a mental institution. Original data indicates she was born in Minnesota and that he was 32 when he got married and she 22. That would mean he married her in 1904.
Name: Hans Myhre Home in 1930: Edmore, Ramsey, North Dakota View Map Age: 58 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1872 Birthplace: Norway Relation to Head of House: Head Spouse's Name: Ida Myhre Race: White Household Members: Name Age Hans Myhre 58 Ida Myhre 51
