Hi,

Here are the Hans Myhres in the North Dakota Naturalizations Database:

Myhre Hans Norway 1st July 30, 1917 Griggs D-6 018
Myhre Hans L Norway 2nd June 22, 1903 Nelson F-11 004
Myhre Hans H. Norway 2nd October 30, 1896 Pembina F-20 236
Myhre Hans H Norway 1st March 21, 1889 Walsh D-3 382
Myhre Hans G. Norway 1st October 13, 1890 Richland D-03 021
Myhre Hans Norway 2nd May 20, 1920 Griggs P-14 049
Myhre Hans USA 1st April 02, 1917 Grand Forks D-15 422
Myhre Hans Norway 1st February 11, 1910 Griggs D-5 044
Myhrer Hans Olsen Norway 2nd May 18, 1944 Grand Forks F-47 1400

From www.greatriversnetwork.com the only Hans Myhre in ND Marriage database (and no dates!):

Hans Myhre - Marie Fredrikson
marriage records
Myhre, Hans
Fredrikson, Marie
Walsh County, North Dakota, United States
Organization: State Historical Society of North Dakota
Collection: North Dakota Marriage Records
Identifier: Box Volume Page Number 0000.003.175

The Hans H Myhre from the list above is most likely the Hans Myhre who homesteaded in Pembina county and was born in 1862-- kind of out of range. That Hans also had a brother Andrew Myhre who was born in 1863. Hans H. is also the man who married Marie Fredrikson.

The Hans L. Myhre in Ramsey County appears in a couple of community history books (a Lawton history and an Edmore history) and the son Ulysses is in a Ramsey County history. When I have access to these I will check to see if there is any information about Hans L.'s origin in Norway.

In case we get a little closer to a connection between Hans in the US and Hans in Norway here is his birth record. Incrediably nice handwriting.

Kent, can you provide a name or names of the people that Hans H Myhre would have been going to in Wisconsin. That might help us find an early record of him in America.

On that same Census page as Ida Haug is this person. I think this is Hans L Myhre. The original is difficult to read but I think it could be a Myhre, Hans in which the original writer has drawn a line through the name making it difficult to read.

Name: Chil H Mahar
[Myhare]
Home in 1900: Township 157, Ramsey, North Dakota
[Ramsey, North Dakota]
Age: 27
Birth Date: Nov 1872
Birthplace: Norway
Race: White
Gender: Male
Immigration Year: 1889
[1884]
Relationship to head-of-house: Head
Father's Birthplace: Norway
Mother's Birthplace: Norway
Marital Status: Single

Using the information on Ida Haug, I found a Family Tree on Ancestry.com for her and her family. She is shown married to Hans L Myhre. Marriage date is 1901. No parents are listed for him but he is shown as being born in 1872 in Trondhejm, Norway. The children listed are the ones we have seen in the 1920 Census.

If the above information is correct, and there is no reason to doubt its accuracy, the Hans L Myhre from Ramsey County North Dakota is not the person Kent is looking for.

Which leaves us back on square one.

Thanks to all for your help so far; unfortunately I am quite certain Hans did not have any family members in Edgerton when he arrived there. However, several families from the same area in Norway (Nes, Hedmark) had already settled there, so there is a good chance he had some acquaintances. A shot in the dark, perhaps, but I came across the following, proving that there must at least have been one Hans Myhre living in the Edgerton area at some point : http://gazettextra.com/obits/2008/may/06/ruth-gilson/
I have not been able to establish a link between this Hans Myhre and "my" Hans Myhre, though; any ideas about how I can verify or disqualify this?

Hi,

Well a family containing Ruth should be findable in both the 1920 and 1930 censuses. If access to Ancestry is lacking you might try www.familysearch.org.

It says that she is the last one of 8 siblings (and likely to be the youngest in her family rather than the oldest) and with the names of her children and their towns you might find someone to write or call.

great, thanks for that; it seems we are some thirteen years off the birth date of "my" Hans, though, so maybe this was a dead end...

Hi,

Well, it might be of value to look at him in other census years just to be sure that there isn't an error in the census or the indexing of this one entry.

And there are other surnames he may be indexed under besides Myhre:

Bye (with or without the eiet, the farm he was born on)
Gulbrandson (his father's patronymic)
Hanson (his own patronymic)

Where (what farm) was he living when he was confirmed? And what farm was he on just before he took off. Those might be other names to search also.

The difficult take some time, the impossible a bit longer...

Jackie

Not only is the birth year off but the Ancestry.com listing for the same census year shows his arrival as 1914. If that is correct then there will not be any earlier census records.

Age: 37
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1883
Birthplace: Norway

Maybe this is a more accurate immigration date. Here he is newly married in the 1910 US Census, still with the same birth year of 1883 and now married to Christine.

Estimated Birth Year: 1883

Relation to Head of House: Head
[Self (Head)]
Father's Birth Place: Norway
Mother's Birth Place: Norway
Spouse's Name: Christine Myre
Home in 1910: Christian, Dane, Wisconsin
Marital Status: Married
Race: White
Gender: Male
Year of immigration: 1904
