hi and thanks for all your continuous efforts and help in solving this mystery! Hans did not have any siblings by the name Peder; his only full-blooded sister (my great grandmother) stayed behind in Norway. They did, however, have two half brothers and one half sister; of whom at least two emigrated, but since Hans never lived with any of them in Norway - I even doubt that he ever knew them (all had different fathers, all were sent away as foster children/servants at an early age; Hans to the farm Myhre, where he stayed until he left for America) - I find it unlikely that they eventually met up in the States. But just for he sake of good order;

1 - half brother Martin Christiansen, b. 13 april 1859, emigrated from Oslo on 2 May 1879 with a ticket for Chicago
2 - half brother Martin Olsen, b. 13 April 1859, may be identical to the one who emigrated from Oslo on 11 July 1882
3 - half sister Agnete Olsdatter, b. 28 July 1863, emigrated from Oslo on 6 November 1885, with a ticket for Chicago.

The Familysearch tip might have paid off, though: searcing for "Hans", "Edgerton, WI", and "1889-1910" and birth year "1870" leaves a couple of interesting candidates;

Candidate 1 - Birth date is only four days off from "my" Hans; birth place seems to correspond; have no idea where the Berg name comes from, though. Arrival port does not match with what we previously have found (Philadelphia). There are several places called "Nes" in Norway, but the name (Bjørnstad) of one of the witnesses in this file points to Nes in Hedmark county (there is indeed a Bjørnstad farm close to Myhre). And better yet; there are no other Hans Hansens born in Nes around that time, so this lead may be a hot one:

Hans Hansen Berg
Event: Naturalization
Event Place: Wisconsin
Event Date: 1908
Age:
Birth Year: 1870
Birthplace: Norway
NARA Publication Title: Soundex Index to Naturalization Petitions for U.S. District & Circuit Courts, Northern District of Illinois and Immigration and Naturalization Service District 9, 1840-1950
NARA Publication Number: M1285
NARA Roll Number: 20
Film Number: 1432020
Digital Folder Number: 004640964
Image Number: 03562

Candidate 2 - Nordby (with d) is the name of the farm in Nes, Hedmark, Norway, where "my" Hans was a foster son during the 1875 census. I also know for a fact that his father worked at this farm as a day laborer. Immigration year is pretty close (1890 vs 1889):

Name: Hans Norby
Event: Census
Event Date: 1930
Event Place: Edgerton, Rock, Wisconsin
Gender: Male
Age: 58
Marital Status: Single
Race: White
Birthplace: Norway
Estimated Birth Year: 1872
Immigration Year: 1890
Relationship to Head of Household: Head
Father's Birthplace: Norway
Mother's Birthplace: Norway
Enumeration District Number: 0019
Family Number: 174
Sheet Number and Letter: 7A
Line Number: 23
NARA Publication: T626, roll 2610
Film Number: 2342344
Digital Folder Number: 4547578
Image Number: 00549

Will try to follow these trails and see where they may lead; but will still much appreciate any tips and hints you may have!

This is the emigration record for Hans Hansen from 1892, destination Montreal. This indeed confirms that "candidate 1" above was from Nes, Hedmark county. I am starting to wonder if it might be the same person who also left in 1889? Maybe a failed attempt and he returned, only to try again three years later? Or is this too speculative?

Well, I think that means we can rule out Hans Norby. What we have so far then, are two emigrations, both by a Hans Hansen from Nes, Hedmark county, Norway, born ca. 1870:

-one in April 1889, arrival in Philadelphia. No corresponding naturalization record.
-one in June 1892, arrival in Quebec. This candidate settled in Wisconsin, and birth date of 12 Dec 1870 in naturalization record is a fairly good match with my Hans Hansen (16 dec). This candidate apparently left a baby behind in Norway, who later joined him in Wisconsin. His son-in-law Carl Bjorrnstad was recorded as a witness in Hans Hansens naturalization record.
-There are no other Hans Hansens born in Nes, Hedmark around 1870.

One possible theory could then be that the 1889 and 1892 arrivals are by the same person? Who returned to Norway, only to return to America in 1892 and settle for good?

Hi Kent,

Thanks for the brilliant summary!

What you've described is the "tidiest" scenario.

The least tidy thing would be that your original Hans Hans Myhre b. 16 Dec 1870, Næs, Hedmark son of husman Hans Gunderson Byeiet age 37 and his wife, age 41 left Norway in 1889 for America never to return, nor to maintain any or only minimal contact with his sibling and that he remains unfound.

And the gray & slightly messy arrea between is another situation leading to a "Frankenstein's monster", leg of one, arm of another and so on.

It is a different thing to say there is a record that labels him as the person vs records which say it's difficult for him to be someone else.

But it is possible that there is another Hans Hanson Berg who was born 4 days differently than 16 Dec 1870 and in some other place in Norway, who came to America.

That is why other records on the ground should also be searched. In particular, if he was a church-going person, the transformation of his name from Myrhe to Berg might be seen in the baptisms he stood faddernes to, etc.

He had contact enough with Norway to be able to know that he had a daughter and to pay for his daughter's ticket to America in 1912.

He finally married between 1922 --when Mary arrived from Norway and 1930-- there should be a record of that. ( By the by, the full schedule of the 1930 census asks a question of each married adult--at what age did you marry the first time? So the year might get further narrowed.)

The complete record of his naturalization (if you don't already have it) might contain a date/port of arrival and possible travel information.

Apparently, Constance kept some sort of contact with Norway (cousin Nordby or Nordberg in Chicago) and it's possible that her surviving children might know (in 2006 there were 2, but they are aged) and that this information has been lodged in her grandchildren as well.

An obituary published in the local paper might also contain biographical information on Hans, Constance & Mary, such as where in Norway they originated.

This has been a terrifically fun research!

I looked at the 1930 US Census record for Han and Mary Berg. For age at first marriage for Hans it is difficult to read but I would for a best guess think it reads 57. For Mary however it reads 42. Which must mean that Mary was married for the first time in 1915 and Hans for the first time in 1928. I guess we would assume that Mary was married at least once before she married Hans.
