Okay, I understand that. It's pertaining to the sub farm, not the ownership by my family. Thanks!
Einar, thank you for the translation. Would Hovdesvea be different than Hovdesveen? They were living on Hovdesveen in the 1900 Norway Census. I don't see Hovdesvea listed in that same census. Thank you both! I greatly appreciate this! Wanda

A curiosity. In column 5 in "Hmd" Husmand/Cottager and widower Jens Nilsen Berget´s death record from 1893 is his son in law Gmd "Gardmand" Farmer Martin Hovdesveen listed as nearest relative. It´s probably because he as farm owner was responsibe for his old father in law. Married woman in those days, even in this case his daughter Ida, could not be a farmowner. I think Hovdesveen is todays Hovdsveen.

I think it's them. On the original, it actually says 1895, which is still incorrect, but it states that Magnus was born in Norway and he's only 6 in 1910, which means if they had immigrated in 1895 or earlier, he would of been born in the U.S. I'm thinking the year might have been lost in translation. |

It's them. I found Bernt's WWI Draft registration and it's definitely him. Thanks! |

Hei. This was a lot of new information in a short time. Do you think they met Johannes Berge in USA? Bernt Mathiasen was a child when Johannes emigrated.
Magnus was born on Sept. 14. 1903. Two of the grandparents were Matias and Ida Hovdesveen.
Hopefully some of Bernt´s descendants will be found one day.

I don't think Johannes met up with them. What's interesting is that Johannes' wife, Oline, had a sister that lived in Idaho. One from the Hjartsjĝ family. I will have to check and see how close they were to each other.
I'm very excited to learn about this branch of the family. I know that Bernt and his family were heading for North Dakota, but Idaho would be much more similar to Norway, so I can understand why they would of settled there.
Bernt's baptismal record. I think I may see another connection to the Mortensen's that also lived at Lie and Berget. I believe one of the godparents is Mathea Mortensdatter Lie. #154 Source information: Oppland county, Ĝstre Gausdal, Parish register (official) nr. 1 (1874-1886), Birth and baptism records 1874, page 17. I just found a picture of him on his U.S. Passport Application. I will have to search and see if maybe one of his parents or sibling died and he went home for a funeral. I see that he returned to NY from Norway on November 20th, 1920. |

I think you are right, maybe someone in his family died.
Good luck with the search, it´s exiting to search for yourself and find pieces to the puzzle now and then.

His wife Gunda Gundersdatter Matsen, had already died in 1918. I found most of the their children, with their spouses, living right next to each other, in the 1930 Census. I, also contacted a person on Ancestry that has a tree that has Bernt Matsen's family in it. Hopefully, I can learn more about his descendants.
I do like searching and finding the info, but I also really appreciate the help that you and others have given me. I'm not sure I would of even found Ida, because I didn't know to look for her. So thank you very much! Wanda |
