This is pretty vague but my grandmother, Clara Mable Jorstad was the daughter of Johan Martinsen Jorstad born Mar30 1861 and Sigrid Prestrud born Dec 12 1855. She also said her grandfather's name was Martin Malmbecken. Both Johan and Sigrid were born in Norway and died in Canada. Clara lived most of her life in N.D. and was married to Daniel Lee Rich. Beyond this I have found nothing. I think the name Prestrud and Malmbecken may be farm names the same as Jorstad. Malmbecken doesn't follow the usual naming practice. Also have a thought that it may be Swedish. Can anyone help? Thanks

Sigrid Prestrud could have come from/or been at Præsterud which in the 1865 census can be found at following places:
Nes or Sørum in Akershus,
Heggen or Opdal in Modum, Buskerud,
Furnes, Nes, Ringsaker or Romedal in Hedemark
Faaberg , Nordre Land or Vestre Toten in Opland.

No hit for a Sigrid in 1865 census for either of these places.

Johan born on Melvold eie 1861, his father was Martin (Martinus) Kristensen (Martin Malmbekken-Malmbækken ?)

Martin´s father was (not sure) widower Kristen Reiersen Malmbækken, 4 children in 1865.
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=17&filnamn=f60429&gardpostnr=630&personpostnr=2881&merk=2881#ovre

The only Johan Martinsen age 5 I was able to find in Åmot 1865 was a welfare recipient on farm Baastadløkken.

Johan Martinsen Jorstad born Mar 30 1861 (= Johan Martinussen) and Sigrid Prestrud born Dec 12 1855 (Sigrid Knudsdatter) were married Jan 29 1880, see #1.
Sigrids father is said to be Knud Olsen and Sigrid was 25 years old when they married, i.e. born 1854 - 1855.

Their son Martin, born Nov 7 1879, was an "uægte" child, see #70.

One Sigrid Knudsdatter which was confirmated in 1870, #16 was born at Præsterud, but her father was Knud Jørgensen, not Olsen. The mothers name however, was Marit Olsdatter. Could it be that the fathers and mothers names were mixed in the marriage record?

The baptismal record for Sigrid, the daughter of Knud Jørgensen, Melbye and Marit Olsdatter, is 1.

Hi,

Well there is at least one Sigrid Knutsdatter whose father was a Knut Olson, this from Gulsvik in Flå:

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=59&filnamn=f60616&gardpostnr=65&personpostnr=405&merk=405#ovre

But a quick scan of the faddernes for Sigrid's children doesn't find names of siblings as in the family at Gulsvik.

Here is an interesting arrival. The famly is listed as Farstad and consists of mother Sigrid and children Martin 11, Marit 9, Marit 7, Andreas 5 and Knut 3. Could Jostad be transcribed incorrectly as Farstad. Looking at the orginal manifest it is possible but not certain. However the family is quite complete and matches the family leaving Norway and the family found in the 1900 US Census very well.
