Looking for information on a possible connection to Roald Amundsen. My great grandmother spoke of playing with her little cousin Roald and my grandmother told of going on board the Gjoa when it returned to Norway from the Northwest Passage. My great grandmother is Petra (Roed) Johnson - her parents were Mathias Roed and Oline Olsen. Petra told tales of playing on Hvaler as children. We have heard the tales but cannot find the actual connection on the tree. Would anyone be able to give me information. Colleen Day

Hi,

More information about your known relatives might be helpful--names of sibling, birth dates, places of residence, etc. Lots of folks have family tales of this connection. And there are several topics on this site mentioning connections etc.

No links to Roald, but I wonder if Petra's parents were cousins?

Mathias Eriksen
Born: 24 Dec 1817
Christening: 18 Jan 1818, Tjĝlling, Vestfold, Norway
Parents: Erich Olsen & Marte Olesdr

Oline Olsen
Born 1821
Father: Gullik Olsen

Ole Pedersen Rĝed, from Tjĝlling, Vestfold. Born ab. 1748.

He had sons Gullech (born ab. 1792) and Erich born ab 1790.
Gullech & Erich were both sailors. Erich married Marte Olsdr, so they should be Mathias' parents.
And it sure looks like this Gullech fits with Oline's father. Age fits with census-1865, and census-1814 list him as mate. Census-1865 list him as former captain.

No hit reg the explorer Roald Amunsen.
Another option is Petra´s first husband shipmaster Hans Johnsen, they married in Stavern Marc. 8. 1883, #2

Hans Johnsen´s parents; shipmaster Henrik Johnsen born in Tjĝme and Andrea Johnsen born Andersen in Sandeherred, todays Sandar, living in Sandefjord town in 1865

Henriks father was Hans Johnsen and Andreas father was Anders Nilsen.
Henrik and Andrea married in Sandar Nov. 1836.

Hi,

According to some "snippets" at www.genealogybank.com, Roald Amundson started a speaking tour in New York some time in Oct 1907. Although it doesn't say US venues but that seems likely And Roald Amundson left Seattle on 6 Jan 1922 headed for New York. Of course there could be other tours and speaking engagments. Was Petra still living in 1922?

Yes - Mathias Roed and his wife Oline Olsen were cousins. Petra was on board the Gjoa in Norway when he returned and also met him in Seattle when he was on his speaking tour there. Hans Nilsen was Petra's second husband. Her first husband was Hans Johnsen and she had 2 daughters - Oline and Andrea. She had 2 daughters - Olga and Rikka by her second husband - Nilsen.
As regards the medal which Hans Johnsen supposedly received - my grandmother Andrea Husby told us that it was a telescope which he received from Queen Victoria for saving British sailors from a sinking ship.

I came across a newspaper clipping of my mother with a 5 generation picture. It says 5 generations of Raold Amundson reunite. Her great grandfathers name was Charles Johnson. It says that he is cousin to Raold. Anyone have any idea?
