Bertha was the daughter of John Thorsen Ullenes (b. 4-09-1817). He lived on the Island of Rennesoy, Rogaland. John first married Bertha Asbjornsdatter (14--04-1840) with whom he had Thore (24-09-1839); Asbjorn (14-02-1842); Andreas ( 29--07-1845); and Gabriel (10-11-1849). Bertha died 12-08-1853. John subsequently married Eliane Olsdatter (17-07-1857). They had Ole Johan (28-09-1857);Bertha Olava (6-o9-1859); Elen Johanne (1312-1862); and Theodor (10-10-1866). Thore & Asbjorn emigrated to the U.S. in 1865. Gabriel followed his brothers in 1870. Bertha emigrated in 1879. So far as I know Andreas, her stepbrother, as well as her brothers Ole and Theodor and her sister Elen Johanne stayed in Norway. The last record I have found is in the bygdebok by Lindanger and Waula. Ole is shown as a seaman married to Rakel Karine Gullaksdatter, Skjold. They lived in Lundsjoen in Hundvag. Elen Johanna is shown as married to Torson, Stavanger. Theodor is shown as married to Elen Gunhild Larsdatter, Naerland, Finnoy. He is described as a storekeeper or tradesmand and fisherman (?). He and is wife had a son, Lars Johan (31-10-18910 who drowned in 1912.

I would like to see if I can trace any descendants of Ole, Elen Johanna or Theodor. I would appreciate any advice on the best way to proceed with this search.

A challenge to find ancestors in Norway.

It seems like Teodor and Gunelia only had one son, Lars Johan Teodorsen. b. 1891, drowned in "kullseiling" capsizing Mai. 16. buried Mai 23.1912.
In add. to Lars Teodor and Gunelia had 4 children, all welfare recipients, on Nordhus vaagen (vċgen) 1910

Theodor and Elen Gunhilda were married Sept 29 1888, see #4.
Elen Gunhilda had been married before.

When Lars Johan was baptized Theodor is a "landhandler" (= storekeeper) - his brother Ole is a sailor and both he and his wife Karina Gullaksdatter are godparents, see #1.

Ole Johans wife, Rakel Karine Gulleiksdatter, was born 1864, see 1875 census. Bapt. record is #33.

I haven't been on this site for a bit. In the past I received alerts when a response had been made but for some reason this time no alerts came. I just found both replies today and I thank you for the information. I am very curious about the four children who were welfare recipients. I assume they were orphaned and note that while the three Haalands were presumably related to each other, Olaf Abeland did not share the same parents. I have read something about the churches taking responsibility for those who were indigent. How did the system work at that time? This is not the first time I have discovered that someone in my ancestry took on responsibility for orphaned or disabled people so I'm very interested to get a sense of how and why this might have taken place.

While it is a challenge to find information, it is amazing to me how much I have learned, both through the help of people like you and from patiently paging through the Parish records. A year ago I would never have imagined I would know as much as I now do. Of course that just makes me determined to find out even more!

God Jul
