Hi,

Here is an interesting fellow Tellef Tellefson Frøysa migrating to US in 1873 from Evje age 19, #15 right side:

Source information: Aust-Agder county, Evje, Parish register (official) nr. A 6 (1866-1884), Migration records 1873, page 432.
Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=794&idx_id=794&uid=ny&idx_side=-345

Here is his birth /baptismal record, #76:
Source information: Aust-Agder county, Evje, Parish register (official) nr. A 5 (1843-1865), Birth and baptism records 1852, page 72.
Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=793&idx_id=793&uid=ny&idx_side=-75

Here is the family on Frøysaa in 1865:
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=2&filnamn=f60937&gardpostnr=586&merk=586#ovre

Apparently the younger brother Tellef on Frøysaa in 1910 with birthdate of the elder and birthyear of the younger:
http://da.digitalarkivet.no/ft/person/pf01036569000163/

Possibly some confusion about which Tellef is which on my part.Tellef Tellefson Frøysaa born 1852, here is his stone at gravminner:

http://www.disnorge.no/gravminner/bilde.php?id=2246694

Well it's probably the younger son Tellef who came to America in 1873, which diminishes the possibility of him being Tollef Thompson as neither the birthyear nor migration year are good matches to the target in US. Here is his baptismal record #88. 13 June 1854, :

Source information: Aust-Agder county, Evje, Parish register (official) nr. A 5 (1843-1865), Birth and baptism records 1854, page 87.
Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=793&idx_id=793&uid=ny&idx_side=-91

Hi John,

Do you know April Goodknight? Appears you and she have the same grandfather. Old message probably means old email too.

Hi Jackie, Thank you for everything, and yes she is my cousin, her father and my mother are brother and sister and the first two children of Elmer Anderson, the son of Anna Anderson, who is the daughter of Tollef Thompson. I know she was looking for information in 2001 I think, I too came across information she posted, but it would seem she was stuck in the same place I was. I am still waiting for her father to dig up any information he might have. Again thank you, I am honestly trying to get more information, but until then I think I am stuck. I believe he came here to the US in 1870, but he might have come here in 1862, I believe he was born in 1852, but maybe in 1849. Honestly wish I had more information. I have gone over several Thompson’s who immigrated from Norway and found most of them had different names in Norway, so I do not ever know his birth name in Norway. I am hoping his border crossing or marriage or birth documents to give us his parents’ names or something, but I have not found anything yet. Wisconsin and Minnesota, and Montana just have not put documents on the internet. and I do not know what counties, or cities, or townships to look in. I just think I am stuck. Thanks, John

Thanks for everything, Johnboyy

Hi John,

Ummm You are not stuck entirely. There is plenty of wiggle room here.

Collect data and documents on Tollef's descendants, including the stuff not yet available online.

For instance, if Tollef and family were church-going people & Lutheran, you might find confirmation records for the oldest two sons in a Lutheran congregation in Minneapolis where they lived from for certain 1880 (and possibly earlier to 1880 since Severt was born in Minnesota) 1902. Sometimes the pastors include information on where confirmands were baptized, information which could to lead to the name of the congregation of or location of baptism. In the case of Andrew such a record might tell where in Wisconsin he was born, which could lead to a place to check both church and civil records for the wedding of his parents. Often the pastors will include information on wedding members such as place of birth or baptism in the old country, or names of witnesses which might be acquaintances from the old country or relatives. American Lutheran Church registers extant in the 1970s were microfilmed and are available for loan (for a fee) from the ELCA archives.

Even though you have some of the data from the online indexes and records you should collect the actual physical documents for each and every person as well.

Often there are pieces of data not included in the online transcriptions which might lead you to the right place. Documents that may have additional information would be the proposed Tollef Thompson death certificate in 1918, the death certificate for Emma C. Thompson who died in 1924 at Fergus Falls (she was a resident there, listed as a married person in both 1910 and 1920 and in 1910 Tollef is listed as married rather than widowed or divorced so its possible that the Fergus Falls Emma is yours) If this were still in the freedom-of-information days instead of the Hippe-privacy restricted days, you could have requested copies of the files kept on the residents of Fergus Falls and other institutions including visitor lists, prognosis reports, pictures. I'm not sure where and how accessible such records are these days.

The early Hennepin county civil registration of birth records are browseable at this address. There may or may not be a lot of extra information there but it is possible to look....

I made a list of boys named Tollef whose father's first name started with T who were born between 1849-1852 from the 1865 Norwegian census online. If you want a copy of the list of 42 names drop me an email.
