I am trying to find more about my great-grandparents. Here is all I know and I can't get back any further than this:

Nels Kopperud born 24 November 1853 in Lier, Hordaland, Norway and died 10 June 1918 in Watertown, South Dakota. The Kopperud name was the name of the farm to which the family moved in Norway. Otherwise the last name would be Nielson.

Mary Hanson born 28 January 1857 in Drammen, Buskerud, Norway and died 3 April 1920 in Rochester, Minnesota.

I know they both immigrated through Milwaukee and lived there several years as Nels worked for Mary's brother, Captain Ole Hanson, and he worked on the Great Lakes.

In 1879 they moved to a homestead near DeSmet, South Dakota.

Any and all help would be much appreciated! Thanks.

According to Ulvestad's Nordmændene i Amerika, pg 753: Nils Kopperud migrated from Lier pr. Drammen in 1874 and was one of the first settlers at DeSmet, S.D.

I wonder then if this is the same Nels Kopperud listed above, leaving in 1872 from Leir.

Katherine, How sure are you about the birth being, 24 Nov, 1853 Leir Hordaland, for Nels. Here is a candidate Nils from 1853 Lier, Buskerud, , father is Anders Nilsen and mother is Maren Andersdatter Kopperud. See #12. Probably the same family as found by Jackie in the 1865 Norwegian Census.

Wow! I am so impressed with all your help.

Nels could have been born in 1852, 1853 or 1854. I have all 3 dates from his children's records so who knows for sure. He supposedly left Norway when he was 18 so who knows exactly when he left. I do think the 1900 Census data is the most accurate but I have found census data changes from decade to decade whether it was intentional or just a mistake doesn't really matter except it is confusing. Found the Hordaland an Ancestors.com so it could be wrong too.

I am embarassed to admit I do not read Norwegian so I am having some trouble following what you all have sent. My grandfather (Nels' son) forbid any of his children to learn Norwegian so other than a few words, I know nothing. Any translations would be sincerely appreciated.

Neils Kopperud at www.findagrave.com:

www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=kopperud&GSbyrel=all&GSdyrel=all&GSob=n&GSsr=81&GRid=10351157&df=all&" target="_blank">http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=kopperud&GSbyrel=all&GSdyrel=all&GSob=n&GSsr=81&GRid=10351157&df=all&

A little variance on death date, too.

Thanks! That was a typo. I had found the site you used for the cemetary. I continue to be so impressed with what you all know. I am a newbie at this and am struggling with an overload of information when I start thinking about all our ancestors1
