I am trying to determine when and how my GGrandfather
Karl Martin Henriksen traveled to the US.
I have always been told he came across on the Empress of Ireland and took the Canadian Railway across Canada and landed in MT. 1920 cencus records indicate he immigrated in 1914.
So ummm the Empress of Ireland sank in a huge disaster (1,012 lives lost) in May 1914. My mother didn't even know this, which is so odd . I looked at earlier passenger lists from that year and cannot find him. Any thoughts on how to locate his passenger record?

He left Oslo on 16 Apr 1914

Empress Of Ireland left Liverpool, England on 17-Apr-1914, and arrived Halifax, N.S. on 24-Apr-1914
It also left Liverpool, England on 15-May-1914, and arrived Quebec, Que. on 22-May-1914

Ancestry.com does have the passenger list for the Empress of Ireland arriving in Halifax, 24 April 1914. Unfortunately a good part of the manifest is unreadable. A quick search of the manifest was not very fruitful, it seemed to me that more pages were unreadable than readable and I learned very little indeed. I did search some of the names on the list posted by Jan Peter and only got one hit. That of Birgit. But as you can see the transcriber was not able to obtain more than a name. That page on the manifest contains 30 names, of which only a few, less than 5 are readable.

I think it's a very good chance he was on the Empress of Ireland, leaving Liverpool, England on 17-Apr-1914, arriving Halifax, N.S. on 24-Apr-1914
Gustav Marken and Gustav Nygaard are registered on that arrival.
Gustav Ols. Morken and Gustav Johans. Nygård left Oslo on April 15th, using the same agent and ship as Karl Martin.
I think Karl Martin Henriksen would have left on the same date.

Of those registered on April 14 on the ship Eskimo leaving Oslo, 35 are listed as departuring Oslo on April 15, and only 2 people (Karl Martin Henriksen and Sandberg?? Jentoft Nikolai Petters) are registered as leaving on the 16th.
He would not have made the Liverpool dep. if he left Oslo on the 16th.

I would agree with Jan Peter. I think looking at the orignial manifest on Ancestry.com that he may very well be one of the unreadable names on page 31 of the manifest. Both Gustav Marken and Gustav Nygaard are easily found, one Marken on page 35 and Nygaard on page 47.
