I am searching for information on an Ole Gunderson (born in Asnes in 1858). I have found him on a farm in the Asnes 1865 Census with his mother, Karen Mortensdatter, and a step-father. We think his father was a Gunder Peterson or Person. I don't know if he divorced or died.
Ole and his wife Oline Thorsteinsdatter (born in Asnes 1858) are documented on a church marriage record in 1882 in Jackson County, Wisconsin. We do not know how they got here, when, or if they came by themselves or together. We can trace them from 1882 to present. We are missing birth records to 1882.
Any help pointing me in the right direction would be appreciated. |

Parish books lost in fire 1929 for the baptism periode in question. No confirmation records available at Ċsnes 1866 - 1889.

Ċsnes is a part of the Solĝr region.
Hof parish was split in two parish´s: Hof and Ċsnes in 1848.
A possible candidate for you. Oline Thorstensdatter age 25 from Hof in Solĝr em. from Oslo 1881 on ship Angelo, dest. Augusta (Wisc?), see here

Thank you all for your quick responses. I did have the information on the 1865 Census from Asnes and the 1900 from US Census. I did not have the information on Oline coming on the ship (Even after looking through those records...I missed that). Thank you.
I would like your opinion on this. I did find something in the Emigranter from Oslo records that seem to indicate Ole and his family came to Wisconsin in 1870... Here is the link. http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=43&filnamn=EMIOSLO&gardpostnr=18918&merk=18918#ovre
I am thinking this is the same family as was in the 1865 Census BECAUSE the people they were traveling with (Halvor Kristianson and Pernille Thorstensdatter) were on the same 1865 census living close by AND Pernille is Oline's sister. The only thing I would say is there were major transcribing errors in inputting the data. Is there any place to find the original ship records? |

I believe it´s the same family. The only Kristian Henriksen in Ċsnes 1865 was Ole Gundersen´s stephfather. The ages for both parents in the 1865 census correspond with the em. records from 1870, only exeption is Karen´s lastname Mortensen-Nilsen (a wrongspelling?) and Ole should have been ca 12-13 in 1870. A daughter Karen age 5 in 1865 is replaced with Johanne b. ca 1867.
Guess you know; Ole Gundersen´s father was Gunder ??

In 1865 the family lived on farm Flisstrand at Gjesaasen. Gjesaasen is or was a subparish in Ċsnes. Flisstrand is located to the westen bank of the river Flisa in Flisa population centre in Ċsnes. (Strand means beach, ihere it means riverbank)
The 1870 em. tells they were from Flisbroen (Flesbroen). Broen means bridge, Flisbroen is located to a bridge crossing the river Flisa. A place Ĝvre Flisbrua (Upper Flisbrua) is ca 3 Miles south of Flisstranda.

Kare...Thanks for the replies. I am sure that is the correct family coming in 1870. I did find an 1880 US Census for a Christian Hendrickson and the rest of the family is the same and the birthdays about right. I am thinking on the emmig. form that Ole might have been 14 and they transcribed it as 4.
Yes..Gunder Pederson or Person is his father. I haven't been able to find birth records or death records for either the mother or father as of yet. I find a Gunder Pedersen on a farm in the 1865 Census in the same general area as the rest although he seems to be living on someone else's farm. But don't know if this the the right Gunder since I don't know where to look to see if they divorced. I suppose those records burned.
It would be interesting to find out if there are any decendents of these people still living in Norway...I am sure there are. I will keep looking and asking questions. Thanks again. |

The mother was Karen Mortensdatter. Johannes b. Sept. 14. 1866 to Christian Henriksen Flisbroen at Gjesaasen and Karen Mortensdatter, see right page #143
This means that Karen Kristiansdatter, Ole Gundersen ´s halfsister, age 5 in the 1865 census died before 1870 and Ole Gundersen´s father died before 1860.

This could be the family arriving in America. Besides the father listed below, the rest of the family is listed as Laren Nilsdatter age 50, Ole Christansen age 6, Karen Christansen age 4 and Johanne age 3. From Ancestry.com. Although I do not why there is a Karen in the manifest, since there is not a Karen in the Emigranter fra Oslo list.

Well, almost missed this. Just below the Chas family is the Helan Christenson (original manifest clearly reads Halvor) family with Pervilla age 26, Mathia age 4, Chas age 2, and Theoden no age.
