Hello I have just started working on my wife genealogy and was trying to find the ship that they arrived on in the US. It is my understanding that when they arrived in the US instead of writing their full name the clerk said thats lots of bergs and thats where the name come from. I do have a place and a year of birth for the immigrants would any one be able to direct me to where I would be able to find out their real(traditional) last name.

Cute story.

There are 7 farms with a name that begins with Lotsberg. They are in Gloppen in Sogn og Fjordane.

However whatever their true name more information will be needed.

I also belive the name Lotsberg comes from Gloppen

Dep. port was most likely Bergen

Only a name can confirm that.

If that is correct it can be more difficult, espasially since we do not have a name, but I think its the Gloppen connection.

The name of the farm Lotsberg has another meaning than lots of berg.
The origin is probably Lote. Lote´s berg.

Various spellings for Lotsberg;
Lodzbergh, Losseberg, Lodberge 1563, Losberg 1567, Lodzberig 1603, Loufftsbierg 1608, Lotzberig 1667, Lodtzberg 1723, Lodsberg 1801, Lotsberg 1865, Lotsberg 1900.

You guys are AMAZING
from what I have found they booked passage through Montreal, Canada and arrived in Canada under the name Stavik I haven't got ther border crossing yet but I am assuming that I will fing it. One problem was that under Anne birth certificate Kristiane's maiden name was Hukkleburg but that explains that. Cn't wait to share with wife kids and her relatives

Thank you so much
Wish my family was so easy to find

Here is an exaple of a correction in the 1801 census for farm Biørkeloe.

Steffen/Stephen Jonsen is incorrect in the original papers spelled Styrkar Jensen.
This is corrected by a submitter marked with a hammer.
Click on the hammer and the name of the submitter and Stephens correct name turns up.
Stephen and Aagaathe had 3 children in 1801, Stephens sister Marthe Jonsdatter was disabled and supportet by her brother. Link
