Another stab at A. Batterud, this from the 1885 Dakota Territorial census:

He and his wife Charlotte seemed to have used the name Potterud through the years, In 1910 he and wife are listed as Patternd alternate Patterud, By 1930 Albert is dead but Charlotte is listed as Potterud. Here they are in 1900.

| Unfortunately, Albert's heritage appears to be exlcusively from Øyer and his wives were sisters from eek Aasnes! Whatever is in the mud is still unclear... |

| I am back again. I have nothing in my family database that looks like Bratterud or anything like it. My mother left a note about her family when she died, and she wrote about Hans Aasen: "Hans 12 April 1905 in Liverpool, England, on his way to USA. R.R.N.I. Hillshara, North Dakota. Adr.: Erik Erikson, Portland North Dakota 09 Oct. 1912." Just at it is on the passenger list and in the census for Hans. I have looked into all my documents and I can not find any Brattrud. "Bratt" means "steep", and "rud" means a clearing, so the name means Steepclearing. Usually people made clearings in the forests to farm, and they called the farm like Brattrud and used the same name as their family name. And there are many steep clearing in Norway. Aasen means "hill", and the farm is on the hillside. And I think Hans Aasen is the person you have found and described. |

There is this Erik Erikson living in Trail County in 1900. Perhaps this is the person that Hans was going to in America.

This "uncle" search was not your original objective, but just interesting to pursue particularly since a relative could have been involved. I think the notes tell that there were 2 sets of records on Hans Aasen--first the departure from Liverpool with a destination of RR1 at Hillsboro (and in the landing record at Ellis Island, the uncle A Batterud at Hillsboro) and then second in 1912 he may have written with new information about how to contact him so c/o Erik Erickson at Portland, N.D.--a different person and place in US.
If the "uncle" information is correct--and it still could be--part of the who might be resolved by knowing the fates of all of the half-siblings of Mathea Pedersdtr and the siblings of Hans Olsen Skjellerudsveen and his wife. This would be a considerable number of people and might not be your current interest but because they are related to you they should actually be worth pursuing at some point, if not today.

Thank you for this link. Jens Anderson was the brother of one of my direct ancestors and I appreciate the link to his birth record! I also have more information on Torger Overmoen if interested.

My husband and I were going through some old family items we just received. Inside were letters from John Blomshield to Particia Marx (my husband¡¦s mother, maiden name Macon born December 1934) He signed them "your great uncle" He was living in the Philippines at the time. We also have found original sketches that he drew and old original negatives from some portraits he did. My husband was young when his mother died but he remembers her telling him that his great great uncle John was a famous artist and publisher who lived in New York. We found articles where he was in WWI and the traveled the world as an artist. He sketched and signed Earnest Hemingway¡¦s jacket to his book and was famous for doing a self portrait in the early 1900's. We would like to find if possible the letters my husband¡¦s mother (Patricia Marx ( maiden name Macon) wrote to her great uncle John Blomshield. We would like to also find out how he is related to us and his heritage. Any information would be helpful. Thanks ƒº |

| John Luther Hansen Blomshield. First marriage 1881, Married Otilia Carlsen 1893, 5 children, Carl Spurgeon, Agnes Lydia, John Wesley, Hjalmer (HJ of AJ) Wilhelmina Margaret (Minnie). Bay City, Michigan. Carl moved to Texas via OK where he met and married Mary Welsh, a school teacher. John was a world traveler and renowned portrait artist, married once, divorced, lived in New York died there in 1953/4. AJ stayed in the Bay City area, married twice. Agnes married a Macon, moved to Georgia. Minnie married moved to Chicago, her descendants are in California. I believe that John, the elder, married Wilhelmina Carlsen in 1881, she may have died in child birth. John married her younger sister Otilia. First child of Otilia named Winnie in wife/sister's memory. |

Albert Potterud died 6 May 1919 at his home. The obituary was published in the Hillsboro Banner on 16 May 1919. It says that Albert was born in Gudbrandsdal on 15 July 1842 and came to US in 1866, living at Oaklar Wisconsin until 1875 when he came to Dakota (North Dakota). His first wife was Elise Floberg and his second wife was Charlotte Floberg. Among his survivors are 2 sisters and 4 brothers. The two sisters and 1 brother are in Norway, and the 3 brothers are Rev K Skyberg, Dalton, Minn., Rev Hans Skyberg, Fisher, Minn., and (gender issue here) Mrs. C. Skyberg at Argusville, N.D.
