Yes unusual combination of images if its a made-up name same in English as Norwegian: flower / shield Did the school he attended have an emblem, a logo or something?

You may want to explore Blomshield at Google Books, lots and lots of references to father the engineer and son the artist.

Mathea Pedersdatter Aasen was born out of wedlock. Olaus's father was Hans Olsen Hovesveen, and his line of family is very special. There is a noble family in his line with the name of Hummer (lobster) and their coat of arms is a shield with lobster's claws. Hummer comes in a line from Stola in Sweden, where a nobelman and clergyman Thore Pytting in 1460 took off to Hamar Cathedral and Biri in Norway. His coat of arms was a knot and a shell There are more clergymen in the family, so Blomshield may come from any of the coat of arms or just a fantasy. Olaus called himself Hummer when he was in the army. There may be many reasons why Johannes took the name Blomshield. My guess is that he made it up because he could not use Hummer as a name because of his brother Olaus. I think he made it up when he started a new life in the USA. I have followed Olaus's family back to 1330, and I can not find any Blomshield.

From the 1865 census we know that Mathea has at least 1 half brother Johannes Fredrickson and probably at one half brother from her father, also on the farm Andreas Pederson. There could be many others.

That would seem likely but on the form at Ellis Island for this trip she is stamped as " Non-Immigrant Alien" which I take to mean just visiting.

Marie went to US in 1900, 15 years old:
http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=5&filnamn=EMIOSLO&gardpostnr=129840&merk=129840#ovre.
Registered on Ellis Island as Marie Olausen, 16 years ols, arrival Oct. 06, 1900.

Brandvold/Bratrud. Is there a connection? Why did Oline and Eline have the same agent, they were about the same age, and they were from the same area Fåberg/Løiten. I will try to find out if they were friendd, relatives etc. when I get home.
