I do not know what I should have done without you!! You made my dreams come true. I do not think the 1930 Census about Oline Hangen i right. Oline Aasen Haugen was born 25 Nov. 1888, so I think this Oline is an other person. Olaus Hansen Aasen was their father, and he changed his name to Aasen from Skjellerudsveen, but he was born Hovesveen. Usually they took their name after the farm where they lived, and Olaus was born at Skjellerudsveen and moved to Aasen. His brother took the name Blomshield, and I guess that is why Marie used the name Blomshield when she got to the USA. I do not know his name, but I think it was Hans. I guess Marie stayed with him in the beggining. Olaus' son Peder, my grandfather, took the name Olaussen, which is shown in the Census about Syver. The passenger list shows he is born in Faaberg, which is right. The obituary shows the name of Syver's father, Olaus, and Oscar as my uncle. The brother in Norway is my grandfather, and the brother in Canada is Hans, b. 31 July 1882. I think Hans moved to Portland, North Dakota in the USA. The draft records are right, and I did not know Syver was in WWII. I see that he is also settled in New Hampshire. Without you two I would never have got all this information, and I am fulfilling my mother's wish.
Is it possible to get more information about Syver's war record? I have to sort out all your information and write them in my family documents. This is great.

Here is a Hans Aasen in the North Dakota Naturalization records. This may be your man-although Aasen is a fairly common surname in North Dakota and particularly in the Goose River area of Steele and Traill counties.

Aasen Hans Norway 1st July 03, 1914 Steele D-5 001

If this is your guy and he hasn't moved to Canada before the war he may appear in the WWI draft registrations....

The 1930 actual schedule for Oline should be examined to see if there is an interpretation or recording error on her birth year. Haugen is a very uncommon surname in Rhode Island where she lived.

The WWII record for Syver was a registration for draft, an informational gathering on the "older fellows." I doubt that you will find that he actually got drafted. Armies pretty much don't run on 50 something males but truly go on the 18-25 years old males and females.

Nils, I think that the Oline married to Henry Haugen is your Oline. Look at the data from the Passport Application. She lives in Providence Rhode Island, is married to Henry Haugen and her birth date is listed as 25 November, 1888. The birth years are off in the two Census's 1920 and 1930 but the Passport data fits her exactly.

U.S. Passport Applications, 1795-1925
Name: Oline Haugen
Birth Date: 25 Nov 1888
Birth Place: Norway
Age: 32
Gender: Female
Residence: Providence, Rhode Island
Passport Issue Date: 24 Mar 1921
Spouse Name: Henry Haugen
Spouse Birth Place: Norway

Probaably Hans arrival in America. The year is off by one year from the Census data but looking at the Original Manifest, his name is probably Hans Olausen Aasen. He is listed as going to his uncle A Batterud ? in HIllsboro North Dakota. W hich is also about 20 miles from Portland North Dakota.

According to a record on Ancestry.com Hans Aasen died Havenhill Retirement Center, Penticton, British Columbia, Canada 23 Feburary 1972. His date of birth is listed as 31 July 1882. He was a Canadian citizen and his wife's maiden name was Ada Girzzley. The death record was signed by his son Norman Aasen. of Grand Forks British Columbia.

In a Family Tree on Ancestry.com his wife is listed as Ada Elvina LaGresly. born in 1908 in England and died in 1961 in British Columbia. They had at least five children including Henry Hans Aasen born in 1926 in Beechy, Saskatchewan, Canada and died in Mar 2011 in Kamloops, BC.

The Family Tree on Ancestry.com is owned by a R C Stearns who appears to be a great-grandson of Hans Aasen.

Here is Oline and Henry Haugen in the 1925 Rhode Island state census. They are living at 25 Harriet Street in Providence, the same address as was given in Syver's arrival record in 1919.

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-266-12050-240965-7?cc=1532195

She is listed as age 35 and is found on the right hand page, line 8 (Henry is on line 7)

Before I gave the link for the transcription of her "card" in the 1935 Rhode Island census. This time the link is to the image of her card. Her birthdate is given as 25 Nov 1884. She is widowed.
