When a census record shows 2 1/2 Potatoes, does that mean they have 2 1/2 acres of potatoes?
Thank You,
Mary Peterson

2 1/2 poteter means 2 1/2 barrel of potatoes. One barrel was 139 liter (31.6 gallon [US, dry])

1 barrel of potatoes was 100 kg, thus; the family had about 250 kg (550 lbs) in stock and well prepared for the winter.

Some more specific info avaiable in the forms to the 1865 census where it says in box 13:
"Udsæd (how much grain was sown or how much potatoes was set) in the year 1865", in barrels of oats, in barrels of rye, in barrels of barley, in barrels of mixed grain, in barrels of oats, in barrels of peas, and in barrels of potatoes. At the end of each custom list, it is questioned how many fold one might expect to get for the various crops in normal year. En barrel of grain set by the act of 28 July 1824 was pretty close to 139 liters, and that volume of a barrel was also used in "general principles for all dry goods." Previously there had been considerable variations.”
