I was under the impression that my great-grandfather, Torchel Gotskalksen Heggen (26 Dec 1826-21 April 1908) -- son of Gotskalk Olsen Heggen (21 Feb 1796-1876) and Anna Salmonsdatter (1795-1877) -- immigrated to America (Kendall/Grundy Counties, Illinois) in 1854 from Ølen, Hordaland . . . by himself. I have his siblings as Ingeborg (1826-?), Gotskalk (6 June 1835–13 May 1890), Ingegborg (1838-?) and Synneva (1853-?), none of whom immigrated.

But I've recently learned that Torchel may have immigrated in 1855 with two brothers, Lars Heggen, and Solamon Heggen(1823-1887) married to Sigrid Olsen (1824-?); and a cousin, Ole Olsen Heggen, settling first in Lisbon, Kendall County, Illinois, then in Huxley, Story County, Iowa.

Can anyone help me confirm that these individuals were related to Torchel and that they immigrated together?

Tusen Takk,

Don

Perhaps the book, "Polk County Iowa naturalizations, declarations of intent, May 1848 - Oct 1889" can help you solve the problem. From Ancestry.com you can find the following record. that seems to indicate that Torchel G Heggen immigrated in 1860.

Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, 1500s-1900s
Name: Thorkel G. Heggen
Year: 1860
Place: Iowa
Source Publication Code: 6778

Here is Lars Gotskalksen leaving #50 & Ole Olsen Heggen #47 + Ole's wife #48:

Kildeinformasjon: Hordaland fylke, Fjelberg, Ministerialbok nr. A 7 (1851-1867), Innflyttede 1855, Utflyttede 1854, side 345.
Permanent sidelenke: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=8273&idx_id=8273&uid=ny&idx_side=-270

Lars' birthdate is noted and so he could be looked up in the baptisms to see if his parents are the same as your Torkel.

Torkel 's leaving is #23 :

Kildeinformasjon: Hordaland fylke, Fjelberg, Ministerialbok nr. A 7 (1851-1867), Utflyttede 1854, Innflyttede 1854, side 344.

Considering that Gotskalk's father is Ole and that Anna's father is Salmon it is in the realm of possibility that they might have named sons Salmon /Solamon and Ole and that there could be children you are unaware of because of the largish gaps between the years of birth for the siblings you do know.

Gottskalk Olsen and Anna Salomonsdatter, Heggen had a daughter Synneva, she was confirmated when she was 14 years old in 1832, see #81. Her baptismal record has not been found, but she was married 1st time Jul 13 1852 and 2nd time as a widow Oct 12 1867.
