Recently, I saw an ad on one of the cable stations advertising a showing of the movie "I Remember Mama". It will be broadcast on this coming Wednesday evening. The ad mentioned it was about a Norwegian immigrant family.
If I had seen this movie before, I'd forgotten it. But seeing the ad immediately made me wonder if anybody had ever researched this family and identified the person who was the basis for the short story, the movie, the book Mama's Bank Accountand the TV show also called "I Remember Mama" and their origins in Norway?
I did a few looks in Google but apparently it hasn't been a topic for some time but perhaps there's an oldtimer or two who may know or remember hearing where the family came from in Norway?
Kathryn Forbes, the book's author, was the pen name of Kathryn Anderson McLean. Kathryn was born in 1908 in San Francisco, California and died in Burlingame, California in 1966. There are a large number of mentions of Kathryn in online directories and the like. The majority say that the original character of "I Remember Mama" was her Norwegian grandmother. In the 1910 census, Frank Jesser b. Denmark, Kathryn's grandfather, was living with her family. Frank Jesser and Annie are found in 2 prior US Federal censuses.

In this census Annie Jesser's birthdate is given as Oct 1849, born Norway, and in the image she came to US in 1871 and is the mother of 8 children 6 of whom still live (5 in the household, only Della is out on her own).

I've looked at the Digitalarkivet and I think I've found the family, not sure. So my question, has anyone seen or heard any discussion about this family before--or do you have personal knowledge of the family's origin in Norway? |

| I am a big Irene Dunne fan, so I have seen that movie many times. It's a good movie about a Norwegian family that settled in San Francisco and the Norwegian community there. |

There is a Family Tree on Ancestry.com called the Jesser-Deanner Family Tree. It only takes the family back to Annie Lund and her father Gunder Lund b abt 1811, Norway and her mother Gjertrud Hawkin b Sept 1819, Norway. Among the various sources listed is one for the arrival of the family in 1871. The usual transcription errors are found. Listed are.
Gertrud Land (added by member Gunder Lund) age 60, Gjerturd age 25, Gjertrud age 25, Ann age 22, Gunnie age 16, Hanna age 11 and Peter age 11 with the last name of Land.

There are 2 Kansas City, one in Wyandotte County, Kansas and the other in Jackson County, Missouri. Annie's 2 oldest children were born in Kansas --although Della is sometimes in records as having been born in California and also Missouri.
What about the son Peter? Any information on him in the database?
There is in Nordmændene i Amerika one entry for a Gunder Lund on page 786:
"Lund, Gunder, udv fra Trønderlagen, var Gaardbr. Sønnen, Peter J. Lund, stationmester i Gary, Minnesota."
But there are couple of Gunder Lund in Minnesota, brothers actually also from Nedre Stjørdalen. |

Just a fun bit of information regarding this movie! In 1948, my mother entered her mother (my grandmother) in a contest in Alberta, Canada, that was promoting "I Remember Mama". Grandma had recently had her 6th and last child. She won 'The Lovliest Mother of the Year'. The prize was a paid trip to Hollywood, a new wardrobe, etc. She had tea with Irene Dunne, lunch with Barbara Bel Geddes (sp?), lunched at the Brown Derby with a famous Hollywood columnist (sorry, brain lapse at the moment) and Jack Dempsey, the boxer, among other activities. My mom made a scrapbook of the newspaper articles and all the photos taken. What a fun thing to look at! I can only imagine how scared my grandma must have been to get on that airplane--sure didn't look very safe compared to our modern jets nowadays. And of course, the neat part was that grandma was Norwegian, which fit right in with the movie! : )

| The movie is just over. It is a wonderful picture, filled with characters that any Norwegian-American would recognize! I'd recommend that anybody who hasn't seen it, do see it! |

I watched, "Our Vines Have Tender Grapes" last night., which takes place where I grew up. Benson Junction, WI is the fictional name for Benson Corners, near Iola and Nelsonville, WI. My father was baptized at the church in that small community. It's also about a Norwegian family and community, at the start of WWII. If you get the chance, it's worth seeing.
